Today I’m excited to introduce a hidden gem in Ueki-machi, Kita-ku, Kumamoto City —
Shokusai Shubo Shikitei

Located near Ueki-machi Central Park, Shikitei is a Japanese izakaya (traditional pub) that also serves wonderful lunch sets — perfect for visitors looking for an authentic local meal!

Convenient parking is available right in front of the entrance.

As soon as you step inside, you’re greeted by live fish swimming in an ikesu (a traditional Japanese live-fish tank used to keep seafood ultra-fresh)!

For kids, it feels just like visiting a mini aquarium — they were mesmerized for quite a while!

Inside Shikitei, you’ll find counter seating, table seating, and private tatami-style rooms (zashiki).

The private zashiki rooms are a real lifesaver for families traveling with little ones — a great chance to experience traditional floor-seating dining in comfort.

Recommended Dishes at Shokusai Shubo Shikitei

Here’s what we ordered —

Daily Lunch C (with sashimi) — 1,000 yen

A dream come true for sashimi lovers!

And the main dish was just as impressive —

Crispy fried oysters — what a delightful surprise!

Even the humble eggplant side was absolutely delicious.

The soup, with its rich fish-based dashi (broth), was an absolute highlight!

The kids ordered
Inaniwa Udon for 600 yen!

And right away — little hands appeared!

This is the Daily Lunch B (with coffee & ice cream) for 880 yen.

Those mysterious hands you might notice…
yes, as you can probably guess, the ice cream was promptly claimed by the kids!
