About Gohanya Fukurou
Hello, travelers! This is Gussan, a writer for [Saru-Kuma].
Today, I’m introducing a hidden gem located in Wakaba, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City β just a short walk from Kengun Shopping Street:
[Gohanya Fukurou].
This charming eatery is known for its soft-spoken owner and delicious homemade Japanese set meals (teishoku) that warm both the heart and the stomach.
While Fukurou doesn’t have its own private parking lot, there are paid coin parking lots right nearby, and the Kengun Shopping Street parking (free for the first 80 minutes) is also within walking distance β super convenient for visitors driving in.
The first thing you’ll notice when you step inside is the inviting counter seating β
and toward the back, there’s a private tatami-style (zashiki) room β a wonderful chance to experience traditional Japanese floor seating.
This room is given priority to families with small children who can’t yet sit on their own.
If you’re traveling with a baby, making a reservation is highly recommended.
By the way, kids who sit at the counter can borrow a cute log-shaped booster cushion β a thoughtful little touch families will appreciate.

β¦the menu is so packed with tempting choices, you’ll have a hard time picking just one!
There are even creative variations on the thick-cut katsudon set meal.
Honestly, you could come here every day and never get bored.
They’ve got an alcohol menu too!
Fukurou is also open in the evenings β and here’s something rare: on Fridays and Saturdays, they stay open until 3:00 AM.
Finding a non-chain spot in Kumamoto where you can enjoy a proper homemade set meal late at night is no easy feat β but for those who know, this hidden gem in Kengun is an absolute treasure.
Whether you’re craving a hearty meal or looking for the perfect way to wrap up a night out drinking, this place hits the spot.
True to its name (“fukurou” means “owl” in Japanese), the restaurant is filled with adorable owl decorations.
It’s a fun little game for families β see who can spot the most owls!
By the way, although I didn’t try it on this visit, I highly recommend the Cold Tantanmen for 800 yen β it’s seriously delicious, especially in the warmer months.

Nostalgic Beef with Rice Set Meal β 1,000 yen
(includes salad, miso soup, and pickles)
Γ la carte version β 800 yen
There’s something so comforting about retro-style dishes like this β a true taste of Showa-era Japanese comfort food.
And here it is!
The Thick-Cut Tonkatsu Set Meal β 1,200 yen.
The restaurant was nearly full at lunchtime, and the owner was managing everything on his own.
Despite being so busy, the tonkatsu came out beautifully golden and crispy!
A true mark of a seasoned professional.
Thick yet incredibly tender β the pork practically melts as you bite into it, with a refined, delicate flavor.
Even my foodie friend was thoroughly impressed.
Fun fact: Fukurou occasionally sells a special “KENGUN Burger” featuring this same tonkatsu at local markets and event pop-ups β and it’s seriously satisfying. Definitely worth trying if you spot it!
