2022.02.21

A SaruKuma writer’s firsthand visit to “Quatre-Quarts” in Hagiwara, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. Prices start from just 130 yen. We’ve also included family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
About Quatre-Quarts Bakery
Hello, everyone! It’s Ginjiro, your friendly SaruKuma writer.
Today I’m excited to introduce Hagiwara, Chuo Ward, and a charming bakery called “Quatre-Quarts” located along the old Hamasen road.
This is a cake shop that our writer Gussan has previously featured on SaruKuma as well.
The shop’s sign reads “Handmade Sweets That Bring Happiness.”
And really, isn’t that true? Delicious sweets have a magical way of making us happy!
From Quatre-Quarts’ wide range of treats, today I want to passionately recommend my absolute favorite β the heavenly “Additive-Free Cream Puff.”
The shop sits right off the old Hamasen road and offers a generous parking area in front, making it easy for visitors to drop in.
Located right across from a 7-Eleven, the bright red cake-shaped sign makes Quatre-Quarts impossible to miss.
Open the door and you’re greeted by a dazzling display case β a true dream come true for sweet lovers!
Whole cakes,
a colorful array of shortcakes,
and treasures like the “Additive-Free Cream Puff (130 yen),” “Cream Cornet (216 yen),” and “Eclair (237 yen)” β perfect souvenirs and what I personally consider the “Holy Trinity” of this shop.
Recommended Menu Items at Quatre-Quarts
Let’s start with the Additive-Free Cream Puff (130 yen).
What do you think? Looks pretty ordinary, right?
Exactly β and that’s precisely what makes it irresistibly delicious.
And the price will surprise you: just 130 yen, tax included!
A cream puff from a real cake shop for only 130 yen.
While the price alone is amazing, what truly makes me fall in love is the custard inside.
Quatre-Quarts’ cream puff custard is the wonderfully “hearty” type.
This old-fashioned, dense custard β where you can actually taste the flour notes β pairs beautifully with the satisfyingly sturdy choux pastry.
With no artificial flavorings, the additive-free custard lets the pure flavors of fresh milk and eggs spread across your palate, and you’ll find yourself finishing it in seconds.
This simple cream puff captures all the careful craftsmanship of the chef and never fails to make you smile.
The firm custard doesn’t spill easily, and the petite size is perfect for small children β these make wonderful gifts that always delight everyone.
Next up, the Cream Cornet (216 yen).
Packed end-to-end with rich custard, this cream cornet has a flaky pastry shell that adds the perfect crunchy contrast β a truly satisfying treat.
Since the pastry tends to crumble and the powdered sugar can scatter, this one’s probably better suited as a souvenir for adults.
I tried cutting it with a fork, but it didn’t look pretty enough for a photo (laughs).
Normally, I just enjoy it with my hands.
Here’s the Eclair (237 yen).
You can’t see it in the photo, but beneath the whipped cream lies a generous layer of custard.
The chocolate coating on top is also luxuriously thick β pure indulgence.
Another wonderful souvenir option is the Half-Baked Cheesecake (140 yen).
This sweet, creamy cheesecake appeals to a wide range of ages, and you can even purchase it in a gift box of five or more.
In the same category, there’s also a Melt-in-Your-Mouth Chocolate (140 yen).
I also love bringing this Baked Pudding (162 yen) as a gift.
It’s an old-school firm pudding, and the balance with the caramel layer is so well-crafted that even my sons β who normally dislike the bitter parts of pudding β happily eat it.
After all those souvenir-friendly treats, let me introduce some cakes too.
This is the Blueberry Tart (388 yen).
It was my first time trying it, and the tart crust was absolutely delicious β packed with juicy blueberries. At only 388 yen, it’s a steal.
While I was deciding on another cake, the staff recommended the Sachertorte (356 yen) with a smile, saying “It’s not the most photogenic (laughs), but it’s so popular that we sell whole-cake versions all the time.” So I went for it.
The chocolate on top was so thick that it crumbled a little.
But every cloud has a silver lining β I got a beautiful shot of the glossy apricot jam layer in the middle. The not-too-sweet chocolate sponge balanced perfectly with the apricot jam, and it was absolutely delicious.
It disappeared in no time.
Simple yet classic β that’s the kind of Sachertorte this was.
There was also a wonderful selection of baked confectionery at various price points.
You can pick your favorites and have them packed in a gift box right on the spot.
The number-one bestseller among baked goods is reportedly these adorable Bear Cookies (356 yen).
They lean toward the soft-cookie side but still have a satisfying crunch, with a delicate touch of salt and rich buttery flavor β eight cookies per pack! They make a perfect little gift.
Every single item was truly delicious. I left a happy customer.
Thank you for the wonderful treats! βͺ
Quatre-Quarts also accepts custom orders for decorated cakes, including portrait cakes.
Rather than printed decoration plates, the owner hand-draws each design, giving every cake a wonderfully personal, warm touch. Looking at the photos of past creations displayed in the shop made me genuinely smile.
They also stock an impressive variety of decorative candles β including character-themed ones β to make your celebration cake even more special. I’ve never seen such a wide selection at any other bakery.
This autumn, Quatre-Quarts will celebrate its 29th anniversary.
The shop has stayed true to two principles all these years: everything is handmade, and prices remain affordable even when you buy a lot.
“With prices going up on so many things these days, we’re doing our best to hold the line,” the staff told me.
While it may not be a large shop, Quatre-Quarts has the warm, welcoming feel of a true neighborhood bakery β somewhere you can pop into anytime.
This time, I bought 8 different items and the total came to just 1,985 yen β under 2,000 yen!
Delicious AND wallet-friendly β Quatre-Quarts comes highly recommended.
