Introducing Hirose Bakery

Hello, this is Suno, a writer for Sarukuma!

Today I’d like to introduce a wonderful little bakery located in Kawashiri, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City:
Hirose Bakery.

Hirose Bakery is located on your left after crossing Kasegawa Bridge in Kawashiri heading toward central Kumamoto.
The parking lot is spacious and easy to use.

The building radiates the warmth of natural wood ♪
It’s fully barrier-free, so wheelchairs and strollers are welcome too.

Embodying their philosophy of being “a bakery that’s kind to everyone,” Hirose Bakery has the cozy charm of a true neighborhood bakery.

The bread displayed in woven baskets gives the shop a charming rustic feel.

Their signature anpan (sweet bean bun) features house-made anko, with sugar kept light to let the natural sweetness of the azuki beans shine.

The melon pan is also wildly popular!

Hirose Bakery often sells out before noon, so I highly recommend visiting early!

Their scones are also a fan favorite, so be sure to check their Instagram for the latest baking days!As a cornet (sweet cream-filled bread) lover, I was especially intrigued by their unusual matcha flavor!

And here’s something amazing — did you notice?

While most bakeries these days have steeper prices, almost everything here is under ¥200 (tax included)!

You might just live the dream of going on a bakery shopping spree! This is the curry pan for ¥140.

It’s filled with house-made curry featuring pork, potatoes, onions, and carrots in a gentle, family-friendly seasoning.

Wait, is this another curry pan? The color looks lighter… Look closely — it’s a “baked curry pan”!

The first one is deep-fried for that juicy, classic flavor, while this one is oven-baked for a healthier option!
A thoughtful touch for health-conscious customers ♪

So I grabbed a baked curry pan for ¥140 right away.
The gentle medium-spicy flavor was perfect — even my 2-year-old gobbled it up. (The matcha cornet, too — almost entirely devoured by my little one, haha.)

And then there’s the Napolitan for ¥180!
The hearty coppepan (Japanese-style hot dog roll) packed with Napolitan-style spaghetti and topped with egg is reminiscent of an old-school Japanese school cafeteria — guaranteed to make you a repeat customer. There’s a small eat-in corner at the back of the shop, which is a lovely touch. And to my delight, you can even help yourself to traditional Japanese tea from a kyusu (teapot)!

Just look at the size of that Napolitan!

Bottled tea and coffee are also for sale. There’s also a Western-style toilet by the entrance.

Why We Love Hirose Bakery

On another day, I arrived at Hirose Bakery at 7:00 AM.That’s right!
They open at 7 AM!

While the sky is still dim, warm light spills out from inside, and the air is filled with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread. The perfect bakery for an early-morning adventure ♪The dim outside light combined with rows of freshly baked bread is enough to make any morning exciting!
The coppepan rolls are lined up perfectly in the showcase. Beautiful! Each coppepan is carefully wrapped and packaged — you can really feel the love that owner Mr. Hirose puts into every loaf.

True to the shop’s motto, “We bake bread with sincere dedication,” Mr. Hirose was hard at work in the kitchen preparing the day’s bake.It made me want to handle the tongs gently and lovingly when picking up my bread, too! (laughs)Hirose Bakery’s bread is famously soft — perfect for everyone from young children to the elderly.

The popular shokupan (Japanese milk bread) is moist and chewy.

My son happily exclaimed, “Even the crust is delicious!”Available in 4-slice, 5-slice, and 6-slice cuts, all for ¥250.

Since it’s not overly sweet, it’s perfect for making sandwiches with your favorite fillings ♪The shokupan can also be reserved by phone.

On the day I visited, several customers came in to pick up their pre-orders!

And my breakfast haul for the day was… the popular melon pan for ¥120

Coppepan (menchi katsu) for ¥200

Apple cream pan for ¥150

Easy on the wallet ♪ My heart and stomach were both full from the start of the day ♪

Hirose Bakery’s gentle atmosphere truly reflects Mr. Hirose’s warm personality. Highly recommended for an early morning adventure in Kumamoto!
