About The Happy’s Potato

Hello there!
This is Maru, writer for Sarukuma πŸ™‚πŸ™ƒ

Today, a treat everyone loves!!!
We’re introducing a potato specialty shop πŸ‘€

Located in Tetorihoncho, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City,
this is “The Happy’s Potato”.

You’ll find it on a corner about halfway between COCOSA on Shimotori shopping street and the City Hall.

The interior is quite compact.
Takeout is of course available, and so is dine-in β€” though it’s mostly a stand-and-eat style!
The space fills up with about four people.

The shop has even appeared on TV.
It may be small, but the atmosphere is warm, homey, and inviting.

The young man behind the counter is incredibly friendly and chats with everyone, doubling the cozy vibe (Β΄βˆ€ο½€)
Some regulars seem to come just to enjoy a chat with him!

Outside, there are two chairs and…

one table seat, perfect for sunny days. Family-friendly, too πŸ‘¦πŸ‘§

Some cheerful little friends are peeking out from the window (^ ^)
Are they Barbapapas? No no, must be the potato characters!

Here’s the menu! First…
β˜… Palette Type (1 cut + 1 dip): Β₯480
β˜… Box Type (2 cuts + 2 dips): Β₯900 β€” pick whichever you prefer.

Then choose your favorite cut.

There are 3 cuts of regular potato alone! And surprisingly…
satoimo (taro) and yamaimo (Japanese yam) cuts too πŸ‘€

And finally, pick your sauce.
There are 8 varieties, including marmalade sauce and homemade habanero β€” each one tempting in its own way!

Here’s the Premium Menu (Β₯580) β€” a luxurious step up in the potato lineup β™ͺ

Four kinds in total β€” every single one looks delicious!

These are loaded with veggies, easily making for a satisfying lunch.

The drink menu has an impressive lineup of alcoholic beverages, too (Β΄βˆ€ο½€)

Since they’re open straight from lunch into late night,
a daytime drink with potato snacks sounds positively HAPPY \(^o^)/

The Happy’s Potato β€” Recommended Menu

This time, I dined in β™ͺ
There are acrylic dividers between seats, so it feels safe and comfortable.

First, a fizzy drink β€” cheers!!!
It looks like a highball… but it’s actually ginger ale (Β₯300) (^^;; The cup is generous and filled to the brim.

And here’s the Palette Type (Β₯480).

I went with the taro chop cut!!! (Tough call against the yam!)

For dine-in, they normally serve it on a plate, but I asked them to put mine in the takeout palette as a fun request (^ ^). Why, you ask?

Because I just wanted to try this iconic style, lol (Β΄βˆ€ο½€*)
My thumbs are pure joy!

Each order is fried fresh, so it’s piping hot ☝️
The aroma is irresistible. Garnished with pickles and crispy fried rosemary β€” beautifully presented, too!

First, a bite plain…

So good (οΎŸβˆ€οΎŸ)

The words just slipped out! Fluffy and creamy taro, served piping hot with just the right touch of salt. Simple and seriously delicious!

Next, I dipped into the chosen sauce β€” Aso-grown tomato ketchup. I broke up the rosemary and stirred it in myself.

Generously coated…
A rich ketchup packed with the deep umami of tomatoes πŸ…
It pairs wonderfully with taro β€” utterly addictive.

Suddenly, it’s a fancy Italian dish!!!

The pickles work perfectly as a refreshing palate cleanser between bites.

The portion is generous and very satisfying.

Thanks for the meal β€” that was so good πŸ˜‹

It had been a while since I’d done the stand-and-eat thing, and the friendly shopkeeper made it all the more fun β™ͺ Thank you so much.

Be sure to try the various potato cuts, plus taro and yam β€” every visitor should give them a taste (Β΄βˆ€ο½€)
