Introducing melanger

Hello, fellow travelers!

I’m Binako, a writer for Sarukuma, and somehow I’m always hungry again moments after breakfast!

Today I’d like to introduce a delightful little spot located in Iwashita, Kosa Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture“melanger”.

The shop was originally a tofu store that has been beautifully renovated into the cozy bakery you see today.

Stepping inside, you’re greeted by a wonderfully nostalgic atmosphere — warm, welcoming, and full of character.

Here you can see melanger’s signature offering: handmade confiture (French-style fruit preserves).
There are many varieties to choose from, and a steady stream of customers came in just for these jars.

They also offer a lovely selection of cookies — perfect for satisfying a small snack craving.
The portions are just right, and trust me, before you know it, your hand keeps reaching back for more. That kind of treat (*´Д`)There were also some seriously tempting cakes and nut-based sweets on display.

You’ll also find bread from Maharik, a bakery we’ve featured on Sarukuma before. In a nice little partnership, Maharik sells melanger’s confiture in their shop too.

melanger’s Recommended Menu

This time, I treated myself to the nut sweets and the lemon cake.

I’m a huge nut lover, so my heart did a little flutter the moment I saw them.

First up: the [Lemon Cake].

The balance of sweetness and zesty lemon tang is like the bittersweet thrill of a first crush — it gives you butterflies!
First love, huh… Mine was back in 6th grade.

Next up, the [Nuts]. This isn’t just a single variety either — it’s a generous mix of walnuts, almonds, and cashews all in one bag.

The crunchy texture and gentle sweetness are pure comfort — I couldn’t help thinking how perfect they’d be paired with a hot cup of tea.

I’m the kind of person who saves the best for last, so I always finish with the most flavorful pieces. Honestly, everything was so good I just kept wanting more.

From the moment you walk in until the last bite, melanger is one of those rare places that genuinely puts your heart at ease.

Next time, I definitely want to grab a jar of confiture to take home. If you’re exploring this corner of Kumamoto, do yourself a favor and stop by!
