Welcome to HEIKEYA

Hello, travelers!
This is Ayu-mama, writer for “Sarukuma.”

Today I’m taking you to Kengun in Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City, to a charming spot called
HEIKEYA.
I’ve introduced HEIKEYA’s dine-in menu before, but this time we’re focusing on their takeout selection!

[HEIKEYA] Stylish Restaurant Serving Authentic Kumamoto Country Cuisine — Perfect for a Girls’ Lunch! (Kengun, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City)

HEIKEYA’s dine-in food is wonderful, but their takeout items are seriously delicious too!

As I briefly mentioned in the previous article, you can take out bento boxes, sushi rolls, and inari sushi here.

Handmade daily bento — 600 yen (excl. tax)

They also sell their famous sushi rolls (550 yen, excl. tax), which you can find at the Heikeya delicatessen counter inside Tsuruya Department Store, and

inari sushi (400 yen, excl. tax) too!

Bento, sushi rolls, and inari sushi are best reserved in advance — give them a call by the day before to make sure you get yours!

If you reserve by phone the day before, you can even choose your bento’s main dish from the options shown here!

They also have ready-made deli sides for takeout!
These can be reserved by phone as well.

Both can sell out, so I highly recommend calling ahead to confirm availability.

They also carry yuzu kosho (citrus chili paste) for 700 yen (excl. tax), and

Ikinari Dango (Kumamoto’s famous sweet potato dumplings) for 950 yen (excl. tax).

As you’d expect from a place specializing in Kumamoto country cuisine — they truly deliver the local flavors!

HEIKEYA’s Recommended Menu

This time, I took home some ‘Nishime Manju’ (steamed buns filled with simmered vegetables)!

These are frozen steamed buns.
Think of them as Japanese-style nikuman (Chinese steamed buns), but filled with traditional Japanese country-style ingredients.
There are 8 different flavors to choose from.
Each one is 270 yen (incl. tax).
There’s even a limited-edition ‘Game Meat Curry’ flavor featuring local jibie (wild game)!

I picked up these two flavors today!
‘Gomoku’ (Mixed Vegetables) and ‘Imo-an’ (Sweet Potato Paste).

They recommend steaming them, but a microwave works just fine too! (^^)b

Here’s the Gomoku!
Plump, fluffy, and piping hot!

Inside you’ll find shiitake mushrooms, carrots, bamboo shoots, lotus root, and burdock root.
The mochi-like dough wraps around savory, richly seasoned vegetables — it really feels like eating rice and a side dish all in one bite.

And here’s the Imo-an (sweet potato paste).
Packed full of luscious, sweet potato filling.
Perfect for kids!
My son absolutely loves this one!

Since they’re frozen, they keep well — and best of all, they’re super easy to prepare. (^-^)v

Great for a quick snack, a light breakfast, or an afternoon treat!

Why not warm yourself up — body and soul — with a piping-hot manju on a cold winter day?
