📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
A Sarukuma writer’s firsthand visit to “HEIKEYA” in Kenkun, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City. Price range: from 1,680 yen. We’ve compiled details on family-friendly features, access, and business hours.

Hello there!
I’m Ayu-mama, a writer for “Sarukuma.”

Today, I’d like to introduce you to a wonderful restaurant called “HEIKEYA”, located in Kenkun, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City.

“HEIKEYA” is a restaurant operated by Heikeya, the beloved prepared-food shop in the basement of Tsuruya Department Store.
The concept is simple: enjoy the famous home-style dishes from the long-established Heikeya in a casual restaurant setting!

Located along the approach to Kenkun Shrine,
the restaurant occupies the first floor of the Kumamoto Prefecture Municipal Association Hall.
Parking is available at the Municipal Association Hall lot.
The parking lot is right next to the association building.
Colorful chairs and parasols welcome you at the entrance!
The chairs and tables are absolutely adorable!
The interior is glass-walled, creating a wonderfully open and airy atmosphere.
You can really see the attention to detail in the decor!
Charming flower arrangements are scattered throughout,
and the stylish interior clearly caters to female customers.
Counter seats are also available, so solo diners can drop in comfortably.
While children’s chairs are available,
there are no private rooms, tatami areas, or sofa seating,
so this venue is more oriented toward adult diners.

A stylish lemon water is also offered.
It’s wonderfully refreshing — perfect for the warm season!
Inside the shop, you’ll also find
Heikeya’s signature Nishime Manju (simmered vegetable dumplings),
as well as incredibly affordable handmade accessories crafted by the staff themselves.
The ‘Nishime Manju‘ is a popular gift item,
and it’s also sold in elegant gift boxes.
It makes a perfect Kumamoto souvenir or a thoughtful gift for friends from other prefectures!
There’s a takeout menu available too!
This popular spot often fills up the moment it opens,
so phone reservations are essential.
※The restaurant operates on a two-part reservation system: 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
We recommend booking as early as possible once your date, time, and party size are confirmed.

Recommended Menu Items

The menu features course meals,

set meals (teishoku),

and a selection of desserts.

This time, we ordered the popular ‘Kenkun Shrine Sando Gozen’,
‘Chicken Nanban-zuke Set Meal’,
and ‘Handmade Croquette Set Meal’.
Even the placemats are stylish!
They carry heartwarming messages that put a smile on your face.

Here is the Kenkun Shrine Sando Gozen — 1,680 yen (excluding tax).
A vibrant, colorful salad

Piping-hot handmade sesame tofu
A four-piece assortment of small side dishes
Main dishes featuring meat, fish, and simmered vegetables (nishime)
Rice, dago-jiru (Kumamoto’s traditional dumpling soup), and pickles (rice can be chosen from multigrain, white, or brown rice)
And finally, your choice of dessert and drink to finish

A magnificent 14-course meal in total.

All this for such a reasonable price!!!
Isn’t it amazing?!

Next, the Chicken Nanban-zuke Set Meal — 1,100 yen (excluding tax)
The portion size is incredible!
And one more — the Handmade Croquette Set Meal — 1,100 yen (excluding tax)
The set meals also come with rice, dago-jiru, and pickles, of course.
You can also add the same dessert and drink options as the course meal to your set meal.
Add a drink for 200 yen,
add a dessert for 300 yen (or both for an additional 500 yen).

Not just the main dishes — even all the desserts are entirely handmade here!

Every dish evokes the warmth of traditional Japanese country cooking — the kind of comforting, nostalgic flavors that remind you of a grandmother’s kitchen.
The Heikeya signature nishime (simmered vegetables) is especially exquisite!
(So popular it regularly sells out at Tsuruya Department Store!)

Preparing this many dishes at home would be an enormous undertaking…
But at HEIKEYA, you can enjoy them all effortlessly!

The staff is entirely female, and the atmosphere is clearly designed with women in mind.
It’s a perfect spot for ladies’ gatherings and grown-up dates.
