Introducing Kochibiyori

Hello, traveler! I’m Asukarando, a writer for [Sarukuma], your insider guide to Kumamoto.

Today I’m taking you to Kanamoto-machi, Yamaga City, to a place that feels like a warm hug in restaurant form —
Kochibiyori (東風日和).

Our writer Binako previously introduced this café famous for its nourishing, soul-warming soups. Since then, an exciting new menu item has arrived, so I just had to revisit and share it with you (*^.^*)

[Kochibiyori] A Beautifully Atmospheric Café with Gentle Soups That Melt Away Daily Stress (Kanamoto, Yamaga City)

The parking lot fills up fast, but visitors politely take turns as cars come and go (^^)

To make sure you get a table (and a parking spot), I highly recommend reserving ahead of your visit ☆

Here’s the entrance to Kochibiyori!

It’s the kind of spot where you’ll want to snap a few photos before stepping inside (^^)

A traditional Japanese kitchen straight out of another era (^^)
When I told my kids, “This is what kitchens looked like long ago,” they just gave me puzzled looks!
Welcome to Kochibiyori’s entrance.
The pale-blue retro door is gorgeous, and the bamboo broom tucked behind it adds the perfect finishing touch (^^)

Inside Kochibiyori.

Walk down the entry hallway and you’ll find lovely rooms tucked away at the back (^-^)v

Here you’ll find a mix of table seating and traditional Japanese-style tatami rooms.
Everywhere you turn there’s antique charm — it’s truly enchanting (*^.^*)

Another retro-antique door and scene that looks like it leapt straight from a Studio Ghibli film (>.<)y-~

Beyond all that vintage atmosphere lies a wooden-floored room that’s perfect for families with little ones (^-^)v

They’ve thoughtfully prepared everything you need for babies as well.

Even the children’s chair has retro flair!

There are picture books and toys too, so kids stay happily entertained while waiting for their meal.

Once you hear that, you simply have to order it!

Even the oshibori (hand towel) here has a stylish little touch!

And here it is —

Ta-daaaa!!

The new Clam Chowder Set!

Where’s the clam chowder?
It’s nestled inside that big hollowed-out bread bowl in the center!

The clam chowder is absolutely loaded with hearty ingredients!

A separate dish holds extra clam chowder for refills.
The scooped-out bread is served alongside, so you can dip it in the chowder for a delicious soak (^3^)/

And let me just say — that bread is incredible!

Just look at those gorgeous colors!

The little dish on the left is dressing — and the dressing itself is so tasty that I couldn’t stop eating the salad (^3^)/

Vegetable Plate

The weekly meat dish looks absolutely mouthwatering too!

Loaded with vegetables, the colorful presentation alone is enough to spark your appetite (^^)

The kids received complimentary rice and the soup of the day (^-^)v

Such a thoughtful gesture — really appreciated!

For dessert, I went with the cheese tart and the gateau chocolat (*^.^*)

Even the chocolate-pen illustrations were adorable (>.<)y-~

The cheese tart was rich and creamy, and the gateau chocolat was wonderfully moist — both absolutely delicious (*^.^*)

A meal full of vegetables, a touch of sweet cake, and a final cup of coffee — everything healed both my body and my soul \(^_^)(^_^)/
