A SaruKuma writer visits “Cherry Bon Kikumoto,” a charming traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) shop in Kokubu, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. Prices start from just 119 yen. We’ve also included family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Hello, fellow travelers!

The first day I started carrying my reusable water bottle,
I was honestly a bit shocked at how slowly the water disappeared.
This is Binako, your SaruKuma writer!

Today, I’d like to introduce you to a wonderful traditional Japanese sweets shop located in Kokubu, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
“Cherry Bon Kikumoto”.

Handmade wagashi… the phrase “handmade” is one of those magic words that draws me in instantly.
If you ever want to get my attention, just whisper “handmade” and I’ll come running!

Parking is available right in front of the shop, with additional spaces just across the street, making it convenient for visitors driving in.

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by glass display cases packed with beautiful, handcrafted wagashi.

Some of the most popular items can sell out quickly, so I highly recommend visiting earlier in the day to ensure you can try your favorites! β™ͺ

Dainagon Chunky Red Bean Dorayaki β€” 119 yen
This isn’t your everyday red bean filling. We’re talking premium dainagon azuki beans β€”
BIG, plump, and gorgeous!

It’s a truly satisfying dorayaki (Japanese pancake sandwich) with serious substance.

Another customer favorite is the
Castella Manju β€” 108 yen

Smooth Red Bean Monaka β€” 86 yen
A double-digit price tag β€” can you believe it?
This is the perfect tea-time treat to enjoy alongside a hot cup of green tea ( *Β΄θ‰Έο½€)

Assorted gift sets are also available, making them an excellent choice for souvenirs or small gifts to bring back home!

Recommended Menu Items

This time, I tried:
Minori (Harvest) β€” 130 yen
Hakuun (White Cloud) β€” 119 yen

Let me start with the Hakuun.
This lovely confection features a smooth white bean paste filling enriched with egg yolk.

It even looks like a fluffy white cloud!

It melts beautifully in your mouth and stays delicious from the first bite to the last.
The rich white bean paste and the thin, delicate outer layer come together in perfect harmony.

Pair it with a cup of Japanese green tea for an even more wonderful experience.

Next up, the Minori (which means “harvest” in Japanese).
Look at that adorable stamped pattern on top β€” isn’t it charming?

The fluffy, soft cake-like exterior gives way to generous chunks of chestnut tucked inside.
It’s truly a luxurious wagashi experience!

I’m completely hooked!
The soft, moist dough perfectly complements the steamed chestnuts, and you can really enjoy the satisfying texture of each chestnut piece.

Soft and chewy, moist, with chunky bites
β€” so many delicious sensations packed into a single sweet!

I highly encourage you to stop by and try them for yourself!
