About the Shop

Hello, travelers!

It was so cold I had to take refuge at my mother’s place —
I’m Binako, your Sarukuma writer!

Today I’m introducing a charming little British bakery located in
Myotaiji-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
“Tommy’s Shortbread House”.

The shop is incredibly stylish and adorable — like a slice of England right here in Kumamoto.

The parking lot is located just a bit past Tommy’s Shortbread House.

Look for the Kojima Eye Clinic sign — the gravel parking lot is on the left.
There’s a clear sign showing exactly where to park, so you won’t get lost.

Inside, you’ll find a beautiful display of traditional British baked goods.

Tommy’s signature item is the
shortbread (2 pieces, 292 yen), shown in the bottom-left of the photo.

There’s also a wide variety of cakes to choose from.

Next to the register, freshly baked scones are lined up beautifully.

English Scone — Plain / Raisin (2 pieces, 378 yen)
Country Style Scone — Plain / Raisin (2 pieces, 378 yen)

The difference between the English Scone and the Country Style Scone is
whether or not it contains eggs.
A wonderful option for those with allergies or anyone avoiding eggs! โ™ช

Below the register you’ll find
jams, tea bags, and other essentials
for a cozy, relaxing afternoon tea at home.

And here’s something unique — outside the shop there’s
a vending machine that sells Tommy’s Shortbread House products…!
It operates 24 hours a day, so you can grab delicious British treats anytime.

Currently the vending machine accepts cash only,
but cashless payment is being considered for the future! โ™ช

Recommended Menu

This time I tried:
English Scone
Shortbread
and the recommended pairing partner for scones,
Clotted Cream!First, let me dig into the
shortbread.

Crisp yet crumbly,
with the sweetness and rich flavor of wheat coming through directly.
It melts in your mouth in the most heavenly way.

For the scones, there’s a recommended way to enjoy them —
warm them up in the microwave first.

The classic move: split it in two.

First, I tried it plain.
The fluffy, pillowy texture spreads with simple sweetness,
melting smoothly on the tongue — absolutely delicious.

And then,
the clotted cream truly steals the show.

It was my first time trying clotted cream, so
I started with a small amount on the scone.

Spread, spread…

And oh my goodness — it was unbelievably delicious.
I thought it might be rich like butter,
so I went light at first — but you can definitely use way more.

It’s not overly sweet, with a smooth, silky texture
that pairs perfectly with the scone.

Next up, the raisin scone.

I slathered the cream on generously this time.

Unbelievable!
Can’t stop!
Won’t stop!

It’s truly that good.
You really have to taste it to understand —
please, please try it for yourself.
I thought I’d have leftover clotted cream,
but it was so delicious I used every last bit.

I want to thank them for introducing me to this way of eating!
That’s how impressed I was.

Delicious scones and shortbread —
how about a relaxing British-style tea time during your visit to Kumamoto?
