Hello there, travelers!

Battling the in-between weather of cold and warm days,
it’s your SaruKuma writer Binako!

Today I’m excited to introduce a hidden gem located in Mauzu, Mashiki Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Kaze no Terrace” (Wind Terrace).

Here’s something interesting: this charming café is actually located inside Mashiki Hospital! ^^
Before entering the hospital, you’ll go through a temperature check and basic health screening.
The good news is that Kaze no Terrace is right by the entrance on the right side,
so you can easily pop in for a treat without going deep into the hospital itself.

Parking is available on the hospital grounds — convenient for visitors driving in.

For traveling families, there’s a private nursing room with a proper door,
so parents can feed their babies in complete privacy.

The café also doubles as a gallery space,
showcasing rotating artwork and craft displays ( *´艸`)
The pieces on display are genuinely lovely, and art lovers will appreciate the chance to browse at their own pace ^^

Inside, you’ll find an open, calming atmosphere
perfect for unwinding during your Kumamoto adventure.

The menu is wonderfully varied:
Maffle Set — 500 yen
Single Maffle — 150 yen
Toast Set — 400 yen
Pizza Toast — 500 yen
Curry Set — 500 yen
Mushroom Curry Set — 500 yen
Pasta of the Week Set — 500 yen
Side Salad — 200 yen
Drinks — 150 yen each
Seriously affordable prices!

Enjoying a quality lunch or breakfast at these prices is a real treat for budget-conscious travelers ^^

Recommended Menu Items

For the Pasta of the Week Set, each table displays a card showing the current week’s pasta —
so you’ll never miss what’s on offer ^^
Here’s October’s weekly pasta selection ( *´艸`)

But the item that really caught my eye was this:
the Maffle.
A Maffle? What on earth is that?

The Maffle is an original creation born to commemorate Mashiki Hospital’s 70th anniversary,
exclusive to Kaze no Terrace (^^♪
It’s a baked treat where fillings like sweet red bean paste or cream cheese with bacon
are wrapped in a French bread-style dough and baked to perfection ^^

I went with the popular Cream Cheese & Bacon flavor:
Maffle — 150 yen

The adorable character stamped onto the dough is
Mashimaru-kun — the local mascot ( *´艸`)

Mashimaru-kun looks even cuter when toasted golden brown ♪
And the best part? Maffles are available for both dine-in AND takeout!

Time for the first bite…

Wow — this is shockingly delicious….
The outer crust, made from French bread dough, is firm yet has that perfect balance of crisp and chewy,
with a nutty, toasted aroma you can smell and taste.
The dough itself has incredible depth of flavor.

Just look at this — the glistening cheese, and that generous amount!

It comes out fresh from the oven, so be careful not to burn your tongue —
but that piping-hot temperature is exactly what makes the cheese melt-y and stretchy in the most amazing way.

The moment I took a bite, I was genuinely blown away.
The cheese flooding my mouth was unreal.

The bacon brings its own salty punch,
and when it mingles with that melted cheese, the flavor multiplies tenfold.
It’s seriously addictive — I’m officially hooked.

Whether you eat in or take it to go,
I highly recommend trying it fresh and hot.

For just 150 yen, the quality is honestly outstanding.

I know some travelers may be cautious about going out at the moment,
but once things settle down, this is absolutely a must-try treat!
