Hello, fellow travelers!
I’m Ayu-mama, a writer for "sarukuma."

Today I’m excited to introduce a hidden gem located in Suizenji, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City:
The Kumamoto Prefectural Government Promenade.

The Promenade is a tree-lined plaza that stretches from the main gate of the Kumamoto Prefectural Government Office all the way to the building entrance, framed by a beautiful avenue of ginkgo trees.

It’s one of the most famous ginkgo viewing spots in Kumamoto City — so popular that my son’s preschool brings the kids here on a field trip almost every year!
Here’s the spot ↑ right on the grounds of the Kumamoto Prefectural Government Office.
The south parking lot is the closest one to the Promenade.
There’s a bicycle parking area right next to it, too.
And check out this one-of-a-kind drinking fountain!
The closest restroom is located inside the south parking lot area.
Restrooms with nursing rooms and diaper-changing stations are available inside the main building of the Prefectural Government Office.

Why You’ll Love It

I took these photos a little before peak season, so the ginkgo leaves haven’t fully turned golden yet — but by the time this article goes live, they should be at their stunning peak. I went a bit early just to give you a sneak peek!

Just look at this!
Even before peak — how gorgeous is this?!
The deep blue sky against the bright yellow ginkgo leaves is a perfect match —
in a word, ‘Insta-worthy’!!!
Once peak season passes and the leaves begin to fall, the ground transforms into a glowing yellow carpet!

And here’s a fun fact: in honor of the historical ‘Higo-Kumamoto Domain of 540,000 koku,’ there are exactly… 54 ginkgo trees planted along the Promenade!!!

And here’s one more famous attraction along the Promenade — the ‘Luffy Statue’ from One Piece! Surrounded by golden ginkgo trees, it looks even more spectacular!
A quick side note: One Piece statues are scattered all across Kumamoto. ‘Sarukuma’ previously featured the ‘Sanji Statue’ at Mashiki Town Sports Park, and a ‘Chopper Statue’ is also coming soon to Kumamoto City Zoo & Botanical Gardens!
(We hope to introduce the Chopper Statue soon, too!)

When the leaves are at their peak, be sure to come visit with your family, partner, or friends!

A breathtaking ginkgo avenue and the Luffy statue are waiting for you!!
