Introducing Kucchan-tei

Hello, fellow travelers!
ใ€SaruKumaใ€‘ writer Cho-san here!

Today, I’m excited to introduce
Kucchan-tei, a charming little eatery located in
Oe, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City!

There’s nothing like a hot bowl of curry on a summer day in Japan!
And with that in mind…

Yes, I know โ€” you may have heard that line from me before! (laughs)

Once again, I’m here with another delicious curry recommendation.
Today’s spotlight, Kucchan-tei, is
a takeout-only specialty shop dedicated entirely to keema curry (Japanese-style minced meat curry),
a true hidden gem known mostly to locals in the know!
Even though I’ve lived within walking distance for ages,
I only just discovered it โ€” and immediately had to grab some takeout!
As for the location,
it’s roughly near the Oe Hello Work (public employment office).

You’ll spot the shop tucked quietly into a residential neighborhood.
(Even living nearby, this was a street I’d never walked down before!)
For full directions, please refer to the access information below.
The shop is on the ground floor of a 3-story apartment building.
Look for the distinctive yellow noren curtain hanging outside โ€” it’s the perfect landmark.

There are 3 parking spaces right in front of the shop, but with customers arriving non-stop, they were always full.

Even on a weekday at lunchtime,
a steady stream of regulars kept arriving โ€” a true sign of a beloved local favorite.

Recommended Menu at Kucchan-tei

As a keema curry specialty shop,
the menu is refreshingly simple!

Keema Curry (Regular / Spicy) โ€” 500 yen
Keema Curry (Small) โ€” 450 yen

You can add your favorite toppings to customize your meal.
Pork Cutlet (Katsu) โ€” 250 yen
Fried Shrimp (Ebi Fry) โ€” 250 yen
Chicken Cutlet โ€” 200 yen
Chicken Tender Cutlet (Sasami Katsu) โ€” 150 yen

Extra Rice โ€” +50 yen
Extra Curry Sauce โ€” +100 yen

This time, I ordered:
Keema Curry (Regular) + Pork Cutlet Topping โ€” 750 yen

Keema Curry (Regular) + Chicken Tender Cutlet Topping โ€” 650 yen

Two delicious choices in total!

The toppings are freshly fried after you order,
so you’ll always enjoy them piping hot and crispy!

I hurried home to dig in!
(To really embrace the takeout experience,
I even ate it on my tiny balcony for that summer vibe! laughs)
This one features the pork cutlet topping (250 yen).
And this one has the chicken tender cutlet topping (150 yen).
Absolutely delicious!
The keema curry is genuinely fantastic!
It’s packed with generous amounts of minced meat, giving it a wonderfully hearty volume!

I went with the regular spice level,
and it was just right for me โ€” flavorful without being overwhelming.

Apparently, the spicy version
packs a serious kick, even for spice lovers,
with a noticeably deep red color to match!
If you love spicy food, this is your challenge.

And the toppings โ€” both the pork cutlet and chicken tender cutlet โ€”
were freshly fried, beautifully crispy, and totally irresistible!

As a chicken lover, I personally found the chicken tender cutlet especially delightful.

And here’s something you absolutely need to know โ€” the rice portion!
Even though it’s the regular size,
the deep container is packed to the brim with rice!
It’s seriously heavy!

To be honest, there was so much rice that
I couldn’t finish it all at lunch,
and I ended up enjoying the rest for dinner! (laughs)

I’d estimate there’s well over a full Japanese cup of rice (about 150g uncooked) per serving
โ€” it’s that densely packed.

For 500 yen with no toppings, that level of rice volume is
incredible value for money!

The small size alone would easily fill you up,
so next time I’ll go with the small portion.

That said,
you really shouldn’t miss the freshly fried toppings โ€” they’re a must-try!

Since toppings are fried to order,
there may be a short wait.
The staff recommends calling ahead to reserve
and picking up your order in person.

If you let them know your pickup time and order in advance,
they’ll have everything ready when you arrive โ€” super smooth and convenient.

This is especially helpful for those driving,
given the limited parking situation!

They also offer delivery,
but for lunch delivery, you’ll need to
call by 9:30 AM to place your order,
and there’s a minimum of 2 meals per delivery order.

Since the staff is small, delivery availability depends on the day.

They have set delivery routes,
so if your location aligns with their route, delivery may be possible.
For more details, please contact the shop directly.

Personally though,
I highly recommend visiting in person
to fully experience the hidden-gem charm of this place!

I’m also intrigued by the Monday-only weekly rotating curry…!
A different one is featured each week, so you could make it a fun monthly tradition
to try them all by visiting every Monday for a month!
