📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
A Sarukuma writer pays a personal visit to “Shokupan-ya,” a beloved Japanese milk bread specialty shop in Wakaba, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City. Prices start from just 600 yen. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Hello, travelers!
It’s Ayu-mama, writer for “Sarukuma.”

Today I’m thrilled to introduce a hidden gem in Wakaba, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City:
【Shokupan-ya】.
Just as the name suggests (“shokupan” means Japanese milk bread), this is a shokupan specialty bakery.

“Try a slice and you’ll taste the difference!” The shop’s signboard makes a bold promise!

Expectations are running high, right?!

You’ll find the shop tucked just behind ‘Yotte Kanne’, located inside the lively Kengun Shopping Arcade we featured recently.

A clear sign marks the entrance, so it’s easy to spot.
There’s one parking space available right in front of the shop.
The bakery sits along narrow residential streets, so please drive carefully if you come by car.

Opening hours are 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
The shop closes once the bread sells out, so we strongly recommend arriving early or pre-ordering.
I arrived right at opening, and customers were streaming in nonstop!
Clearly a local favorite.

Inside, there’s just a counter for ordering.
There’s no eat-in space.A fun side note: even the vending machine next to the shop is decorated with adorable Shokupan-ya illustrations!

Recommended Menu

Here’s the menu!
Plain — 600 yen
Raisin — 800 yen
Azuki (Sweet Red Bean) — 800 yen
Cheese — 900 yen
Tricolor — 900 yen

Everything except the Plain loaf requires a reservation. Please order by the day before!
This time, I picked up the Plain loaf.
A carrying bag was included free of charge.
Ta-daaa! Look at how cloud-soft this loaf is!

Photos can’t quite capture how impossibly fluffy this bread is!
The ingredients are wonderfully thoughtful too — completely additive-free, with no eggs and no honey.
That makes this loaf a fantastic option for travelers with food allergies
or families wanting safe, wholesome bread for little ones.

The natural, gentle sweetness was a big hit — my son devoured his slice and called out, “Yummy!”
I tore off a piece.
It’s so soft and pillowy that you almost feel it might collapse just from holding it.
Then I tried slicing it.
(I really wanted you to feel the fluffiness, so I zoomed in close — does it come through?)

It’s so unbelievably airy that the slices weren’t perfectly even, but to truly savor that signature softness, we recommend eating it fresh and untoasted.

While Sarukuma’s “shokupan roundtable” has introduced many wonderful loaves, the bread from 【Shokupan-ya】 is absolutely outstanding — please give it a try when you visit Kumamoto!
