Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Ayu-Mama, a writer for “Sarukuma.”

Today I’d like to introduce
【Kaori no Mori (Fragrance Forest)】, located in Toshima-nishi, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City.

The name might make you tilt your head and wonder, “Wait, what is this place?”
Believe it or not, it’s actually a park!
This “Kaori no Mori” was created as part of
the “Mori no Miyako (City of Forests)” urban development initiative,
and it’s planted with fragrant flowers and trees that bloom across all four seasons.
So please note: there are no playground attractions for children here.
It’s a slightly more grown-up park where you come to enjoy beautiful fragrances!

The park is tucked into a residential neighborhood,
so it can be a little tricky to find at first,
but don’t worry — there’s a big sign to guide you in!
The parking lot is clearly marked with signage too.
And it’s nice and roomy.

There’s a bicycle parking area too.
Right inside the entrance, there’s a clean restroom.
A drinking fountain is right by the entrance too!
Heads up: there are no vending machines.
Please bring your own drinks with you.
Here’s a friendly notice from the park, asking visitors to keep things tidy.

What We Love About It

The grounds are filled with trees whose flowers and leaves give off lovely scents, along with
herbs growing throughout the park.
This time of year, the sweet, peachy aroma of ‘kinmokusei’ (fragrant osmanthus)
drifts through the air from somewhere unseen — it’s absolutely heavenly!!!

Some of the trees have already started to turn red and gold,
so you can really feel autumn arriving!

Just a handful of locals walking their dogs or out for a stroll —
it never gets crowded, which makes it perfect for a relaxed, uncrowded visit.

And look — there were even a few cosmos flowers in bloom!

The park is also close to Kumamoto Airport, so you can spot airplanes flying overhead — kids love it!!!

While there’s no playground equipment here, kids can still run free,
collect acorns and pinecones,
and feel the changing seasons firsthand — it’s a wonderful park for connecting with nature!
