A SaruKuma writer visits BlueMarble, a beloved chiffon cake café in Kosa Town, and shares everything you need to know. Prices start from just 150 yen. We also cover family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
Introducing BlueMarble (ぶるぅまぁぶる / Burū Mābaru)
Hello travelers! I’m Aikero, a writer for SaruKuma.
There’s nothing better than discovering a café you immediately want to revisit, right?
Well, I just found another one to add to my list! (*’ω’*)
Today I’m introducing a wonderful spot located in Kosa Town, Kamimashiki District:
BlueMarble (ぶるぅまぁぶる).
A single slice of chiffon cake costs just 150 yen!
This hidden-gem café in Kosa Town also offers a fluffy chiffon cake plate set for only 500 yen.
Word-of-mouth has spread fast, and the cakes often sell out before noon!
The owner has been baking chiffon cakes for so long that the menu now features over 30 different flavors.
The lineup changes daily — could you possibly try them all?
I discovered this lovely café on the map after enjoying lunch at Yoridokoro Engawa in Kosa Town.
It’s truly an under-the-radar spot — when I visited on a weekday afternoon, only 3 cakes were left!
Many customers buy them in bulk as gifts, so reserving in advance and arriving in the morning is highly recommended.
So let me show you around! (^^)/
The café sits right across from the Kumamoto Bus Kosa Office.
There are 4 parking spaces directly in front of the shop.
The owner’s family home is right next door, and you can also park in front of their garage.
The greenery at the entrance is so soothing!
The moment I opened the door, the sweet, toasty aroma of freshly baked chiffon cake greeted me. ♡
The owner had just finished baking the next day’s batch since stock was running low.
Inside, there’s counter seating plus 2 tables.
For larger groups, calling ahead is recommended.
Strollers are welcome too! (^^)/
Here’s the BlueMarble menu.
〈Eat-In〉
・Chiffon Cake Set — 500 yen
(Chiffon cake + drink)
・Drink only — 200 yen
〈Takeout〉
・Chiffon Cake — 150 yen
・Drink — 150 yen
・Whole Cake (15cm) — 800 yen
Aren’t those prices unbelievably reasonable!?
No wonder customers buy them in bulk as gifts.
The chiffon cake flavors rotate daily, so you never know what you’ll find — that’s part of the fun!
Amazingly, there are over 30 flavors in total!
Seasonal varieties include yuzu, sweet potato, and chestnut.
The shop also sells handmade accessories and clothing.
A sign reads: “Why not try a hands-on experience here?”
What kind of experience, you ask?
At BlueMarble, you can make your own accessories while enjoying chiffon cake!
・Handmade Experience — 1,000 yen (advance reservation recommended)
Includes the experience plus a chiffon cake set
And it’s only 1,000 yen including the chiffon cake set!
It’s such a great deal that I’m definitely doing it next time. (*’ω’*)
For children, there are options like making beaded straps too.
Advance reservations are appreciated.
The interior decor is so charming as well.
Look — a little frog on the counter! ♡
I recognized this one!
It’s a seed I saw at last year’s “Traveling Seeds” special exhibit at the Kumamoto Museum!
I had a fun mini-chat with the owner about it. (laughs)
BlueMarble Recommended Menu

In the back is plain flavor, in the front is orange.
Those were the only two flavors left! (laughs)
Since the chiffon cake set is only 500 yen, I assumed maybe it would just come with a bit of whipped cream, or that the slice would be small.
But the generous portion completely surprised me — in the best way!
My drink was lemonade!
The plate also came with banana, cherry, muscat grapes, and vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel sauce!
And the fruit was fresh — not frozen!
As for the chiffon cake itself — incredibly fluffy!
Not the slightest bit dry, with bits of orange pulp here and there.
The orange flavor isn’t overwhelming — just gently present.
Moist, tender, and absolutely delicious!
Eat it plain, or pair it with the vanilla ice cream — both are delightful.
The slice is generous, so it’s surprisingly satisfying!
Now I really get why people buy these as gifts (for the second time)!
I asked the owner, Ms. Omori, why the prices are so affordable.
This area has a lot of older residents, so I wanted to create a gathering place for the local community.
Kind of like a traditional Japanese sweet shop.
I can imagine locals chatting away over delicious chiffon cake.
Since it started as a hobby, did you bake often before?

But every batch turns out a little different — chiffon cake is surprisingly tricky.
I wanted to perfect it, so I baked them again and again, until my kids started complaining “Again?”
Kids are the harshest critics, you know.
Even after I got it right once, I kept refining the recipe until it was good enough to serve to others.
Well, your chiffon cake really is unbelievably fluffy and delicious!
I’d love to try other flavors, so I’ll definitely be back!

Since we were the only customers during my visit, we ended up exchanging recommendations for great local lunch spots — such a fun time!
The owner often goes out for lunch with friends and loves swapping restaurant tips with customers.
She’s so easy to talk with that I happily shared a few of my favorite spots too. (*’ω’*)
Before visiting, I had assumed Kosa Town would be far away, but it really isn’t!
It only took about 15 to 20 minutes from AEON Mall Kumamoto to reach the café.
Kosa Town has a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere and lots of charming shops, so I highly recommend exploring the area on your next trip! (^^)/
