Welcome to Aso Shimoda-jo Station
Hello travelers! This is Aikero,
a Sarukuma writer who feels delightfully left behind by the flow of time.
Today I’m taking you to Minamiaso Village in Aso District, to a place called
Aso Shimoda-jo Station.
Yes, that castle-like building is the actual station house of Aso Shimoda-jo Station on the Minamiaso Railway.
It used to be known as “Aso Shimoda-jo Fureai Onsen Station” โ an unusual station that even had its own hot spring on site.
Unfortunately, the onsen was damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, so “Fureai Onsen” was dropped from the name, leaving us with the current Aso Shimoda-jo Station.
Although it’s an unmanned station, don’t let that fool you โ this place is packed with charm, from a mechanical robot greeting system to a wonderfully suspicious-looking fortune-telling hut!
Quirky gadgets, humor-filled contraptions, and laugh-out-loud surprises make it a hidden gem the whole family can enjoy.
There’s a parking lot to the left of the station building.
You can drive here, but riding the Minamiaso Railway train is also a fantastic way to arrive!
Just note that after the morning hours, trains run roughly once every two hours โ so if you’re traveling with kids, driving is probably the easier option.

At first glance, it looks like a perfectly ordinary little station.
But wait โ right next to the platform-side door stands a giant robot!
From outside, you can see the full body of the robot.
This is the famous “Unmanned Welcome Robot” โ Aso Shimoda-jo Station’s signature attraction.
The robot uses sensors to detect arriving trains.
When one pulls in, lively music starts up, and the robots spring into action with a flashy, over-the-top welcome!
There are even welcome fans set out for human visitors, so if your timing is right, you can join the robots in cheering on the train โ guaranteed fun!
From the platform, you’ll be greeted by sweeping views of the Minami-Sotorinzan mountain range.
There’s nothing to hear but the sounds of nature โ peaceful, quiet, and absolutely magical.
By the way, the welcome system only activates when a train arrives.
I’ve caught it in action before during a trolley train ride, but this time my timing was off and I missed it.
If you want to see it in action, check the Minamiaso Railway timetable and plan your visit accordingly.
There are restrooms inside the station building too.
Just a hunch, but I had a feeling the bathroom might also be hiding a surprise โ and sure enough, peeking inside revealed the cheeky pun-style sign: “If you leave your poop behind, your luck will run away too.” A blessing? You decide!
Top Highlights of Aso Shimoda-jo Station

Meet the “You Can’t Buy What You Want” Vending Machine โ only 100 yen.
Just for fun, I dropped in a 100-yen coin and pressed the button for the juice on the far right.
Music started playing, an announcement teased “What’s gonna come outโฆ?” and out popped โ the juice from the middle. Ha!
It’s not a flashy gimmick, but it’s the kind of low-key chuckle that makes you grin. Highly recommended.
Just be warned: since you don’t get what you pick, this is risky territory for toddlers in the “no!” phase.
Next up: the Showa-era “Whisper-Whisper” Black Telephone Box.
Lift the receiver and the phone next to it rings โ letting you have a real conversation through old-school rotary phones!
It was my daughter’s first time using a black telephone, and she absolutely loved it โ playing again and again.
We had the place to ourselves during our visit, but if other visitors are around, please take turns and share the fun.
This is the “Aso Shimoda 100-Yen Corner” โ items bought for around 100 yen, sold back to you for 100 yen.
Is it just me, or does every corner of this station spark a little giggle?
There’s a 100-yen omikuji (fortune-telling) machine and a classic “gara-gara” lottery drum too.
No small change? No problem!
Pop in a 1,000-yen bill and this special gachapon (capsule) machine doubles as both a money-changer AND a toy โ way more entertaining than your standard cash exchange.
They also offer custom keychains where you can engrave the text of your choice.
The ranking of “most-engraved phrases” is hilariously casual โ but wait, #5 is a nickname for a mistress?! (; ๏ฝฅ`ะด๏ฝฅยด)
There’s also a “big face” sign โ a fun perspective trick photo prop.
Move forward and back to find that perfect comedic angle, and have fun experimenting!

Right by the parking lot, you’ll spot a delightfully suspicious-looking little hut.
The sign on the front reads: “The Maniac Spot โ Omikuji Hut.”

Inside, you’ll find row after row of handmade fortune-telling machines crafted by the Aso Karakuri Laboratory โ also known as the stationmaster of Aso Shimoda-jo Station!
Driven by the desire to “transform this quiet, sleepy station with karakuri (mechanical contraptions),” he took on the role of stationmaster.
Each fortune machine is just 100 yen.
Honest heads-up though: if you’ve got an easily spooked little one, this hut might be best skipped.
Need change? Don’t worry โ there’s a money-changer right inside the hut.
And the verdict from my fortuneโฆ? KYO โ the worst luck possible!
My daughter’s clueless, beaming smile next to that ominous “kyo” result was the perfect match for the spooky-fun vibe of the omikuji hut.
I didn’t grab a photo, but there’s also a free fortune-telling machine that gives you a reading without dispensing a paper slip.
Beyond the omikuji, there are also handmade business-card machines and coasters for sale.
There’s a backup machine that dispenses paper for those whose omikuji didn’t print out, and a business-card-exchange machine too โ pressing the button releases a slip of paper.
Buttons are tempting, especially for kids โ but please remember these are real products for sale.
Keep an eye on little ones and make sure they don’t push buttons just for fun.

Aso Shimoda-jo Station is a beautiful example of how locals have transformed a quiet, unmanned station into a vibrant playground of karakuri creativity.
Why not stop by and enjoy the playful gadgets and chuckle-worthy contraptions? โช
