A Sarukuma writer visits La vigne, a delightful little cake shop in Aitomi, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City. We cover family-friendly features, access tips, and opening hours — everything international visitors need to know before stopping by.
Introducing La vigne
Hello travelers! I’m Aikero, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m excited to introduce you to La vigne, a tiny treasure of a cake shop tucked away in Aitomi, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City.
【La vigne】 opened just last September, and it’s been winning hearts ever since.
You’ll find it right near Sunahara Minami Park — a perfect spot for a sweet stop during a Kumamoto countryside stroll.
I had been curious about this place for ages — and finally got the chance to visit!
Head toward the Akita Community Center, and you’ll spot the Kumamoto Minami Police Akita Substation right next door.
Just past the substation, you’ll see two traffic mirrors.
Turn at the mirror closest to the substation!
As the shop’s Instagram kindly warns, GPS navigation often takes you to the back of the shop, so follow these directions instead.
After turning, drive about 100 meters and the entrance to La vigne will appear on your right.
The parking area is right out front — convenient for travelers with rental cars.
Believe it or not, this stylish building used to be a warehouse — you’d never guess from the chic exterior!
The right side of the shop features a lovely lifestyle goods corner.
It was a cloudy day, but the sunlight peeking through occasionally cast the most beautiful shadows…
Even the baking molds are arranged like artwork — every corner is Instagram-worthy.
Unusually for a cake shop in Japan, La vigne offers an eat-in space — perfect for slowing down and enjoying your treat.
With kids’ chairs and blankets ready to go, this is a wonderfully family-friendly spot.
There’s also a spacious restroom in the back — always a plus when traveling!
For baked goods, the Earl Grey and chocolate chip varieties are crowd favorites.
With so many tempting options, it’s seriously hard to choose…
And here’s the lineup on the day I visited:
Fruit tarts, black tea pudding, tiramisu — and more.
Even though I arrived in the morning, several cakes were already sold out, with only a few of others remaining!
Cream puffs and éclairs especially tend to sell out before noon, so come early!
You can reserve cakes by phone or Instagram DM — a handy tip for visitors!
They also have chiffon cake — Chocolate Chip Chiffon ¥580.
It was reportedly added “thanks to customer requests” — how lovely is that?
And here’s a peek at the drink menu.
La vigne — Recommended Menu

Strawberry Tart ¥600
After going back and forth between this and the Mont Blanc, I finally chose the glistening seasonal strawberry tart!
Paired with a refreshing red grape juice ♪
The tart shell is thick yet wonderfully moist on the inside.
The cream and custard are lightly sweetened, letting the natural sweetness of the strawberries shine through — absolutely delicious!
While we were enjoying our cake, a kind customer offered some sweets to my son saying, “Here you go!”
Apparently, neighborhood children often drop by La vigne, and customers regularly bring snacks “for the kids who visit”.
What a heartwarming sense of community! Thank you so much.
So, on to the next round of treats!
Éclair ¥380 / Cream Puff ¥280
Packed with cream yet beautifully light — the gentle sweetness means you won’t feel weighed down at all.
The éclair’s chocolate coating is thick and snaps satisfyingly with each bite, balancing rich chocolate sweetness with the cream,
topped with cacao nibs (I think?) that add a slight bitterness and gentle acidity — truly outstanding!
Chocolate Chip Cookie ¥150 / Peanut Cocoa Cookie ¥150
Light and crisp on the outside, with a delicate crumb that melts on the tongue.
Generous chocolate chips and the rich aroma of peanuts fill every bite (●^o^●)
“We want children to experience the real thing.”
With that philosophy, the shop uses Kumamoto-grown wheat flour and rice flour, fresh fruit, rare domestic cultured butter, and fresh cream —
everything is handmade so even the smallest children can enjoy these sweets safely.
That same dedication extends to their tableware.
“We want children to know the weight of real ceramics, and the joy of eating from special dishes from a young age,”
so kids are served the very same plates and cups as the adults. (Kid-sized forks and spoons are available, of course.)
The owner told me, “I’m fine if they break” — a powerful expression of how deeply they care about young guests.
La vigne is a true gathering place for local kids, and the owners are even thinking about adding shaved ice and parfaits for the summer season!
The owner has loyal fans far and wide, and word of mouth has even brought customers from other prefectures!
One taste, and you’ll be a fan too — guaranteed (●^o^●)
Run by a wonderful couple, this charming little cake shop is absolutely worth a visit during your Kumamoto travels~(^^)/
