A SaruKuma writer’s first-hand report on “Michi-no-Eki Ashikita Dekopon,” a roadside station located in Sashiki, Ashikita Town, Ashikita District, Kumamoto. Prices start from just 250 yen. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Hello, travelers!
This is Rikotama, writer for SaruKuma!

Today I’m introducing a fantastic roadside station in Sashiki, Ashikita Town, Ashikita District, Kumamoto Prefecture:
【Michi-no-Eki Ashikita Dekopon】

It’s conveniently located right after you exit the Ashikita IC on the Minami-Kyushu Expressway — perfect for a road trip pit stop!

The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a vibrant 【Autumn Harvest】 fair display packed with local specialties —
Dekopon jelly, Dekopon pudding, Dekopon juice, and so much more! (Dekopon is a sweet, juicy citrus that Kumamoto is famous for.)

You’ll also find fresh vegetables harvested that very morning,

…and a colorful display of seasonal fruit!
Alongside the famous mikan oranges, you’ll see apples, Japanese pears, grapes, and Western pears — a real autumn paradise.

Don’t miss the freshly baked breads and homemade jams from local bakeries, plus the unique Shiranui karinto (Japanese sweet cracker) on the shelves ♪

Toward the back of the store, you’ll find tempting bento boxes, ready-made side dishes, and onigiri (rice balls) made with new-crop rice — perfect for a quick lunch or picnic!

It’s new-rice season in Japan, and everything looked absolutely irresistible!

The staff’s #1 recommendation? Their signature menchi-katsu (deep-fried minced meat cutlet)!
A proud sign on the counter declares: “Our shop’s pride — the best menchi-katsu!”

What We Recommend

Our top pick? The in-store ice cream selection ☆

【Ice Cream Cups】

Dekopon, Dekopon Milk, Jersey Milk, Chocolate & Cookie,

Strawberry Milk, and Japanese Chestnut — six delicious flavors.

Single scoop: 250 yen / Double scoop: 330 yen!

【Soft-Serve】

Dekopon Soft, Hokkaido Soft, and Mix — three flavors.

380 yen!

I went straight for the “Japanese Chestnut” (wa-guri) flavor without hesitation!
It’s a seasonal special you can only enjoy this time of year.

The fluffy chestnut texture combined with rich, creamy milk made it taste
like eating a luxurious Mont Blanc dessert in ice cream form —
absolutely indulgent!

If you’re visiting in autumn, this is a must-try!

And finally, take a look at this…

Just look at this!

【Hanakappa Bread】 121 yen (tax included)!!

So adorable! (Hanakappa is a popular Japanese kids’ anime character.)
They also had Anpanman bread, but my son went straight for this one!

If you’re traveling through the Minamata area or southern Kumamoto, be sure to drop by 【Michi-no-Eki Ashikita Dekopon】 — you won’t regret it!
