Miki Monaka (Yanagiya Honpo) in Minamata: A Beloved Hidden Sweet Shop Down a Quiet Alley
2023.03.29

A SaruKuma writer visits “Miki Monaka (Yanagiya Honpo)” in Jinnai, Minamata City, and shares a firsthand report. Price guide: from 200 yen. We also cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.
Introducing Miki Monaka
Hello travelers! This is Kanao, your SaruKuma writer 🌱

Today, I’m taking you to a charming traditional Japanese sweet shop in Jinnai, Minamata City:
[Miki Monaka (Yanagiya Honpo)]
From the Minamata Interchange, turn left at the Minamata City Hall intersection and drive a short distance until you spot this sign 👇

There’s the sign! ☝
You can clearly read “Miki Monaka & Yokan” written in big, bold letters!

Not just the signboard — even the shutter is decorated with information about Miki Monaka ◎
The shop itself is tucked a little deeper down the lane, but you can park right here too (^^)

Turn left at the sign and you’ll find this narrow alley — and yes, it really is narrow ^^;
A regular car can squeeze through, but only just!
Continue down the lane and 👇

…you’ll find a small parking area with three spaces ◎
Since both the lane and the lot are tight, drivers with larger vehicles or anyone less confident behind the wheel may want to park in front of the shutter near the main road instead (^^)

A little further down the alley, you’ll spot —
the lovely “Miki Monaka” sign ◎ The lettering is wonderfully cute ♡

From a distance, ta-daa! Here it is ☝
It feels less like walking into a shop and more like stepping into someone’s family home — wonderfully welcoming.

You step inside, and the counter is set up a little further in.
I visited on a Saturday and there was already a lovely line of customers waiting.
When people in Minamata talk about wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets), “Miki Monaka” is one of the very first names that comes up — it’s truly a local legend (^^)

Right next to the counter, there’s a cozy little bench area where you can take a seat.

And here’s a wonderfully thoughtful touch!
・Barley tea (mugicha)
・Green tea
・Cold water and hot water
…are all available to enjoy free of charge ◎
You can buy your sweets and savor them right there on the spot!
Tucked away in a quiet back lane, it’s the perfect peaceful spot to relax for a moment (^^)

And here’s the shop counter ☝
Wow — isn’t it absolutely charming?!
The sweets are sold from a slightly raised tatami platform.
It’s a shop, sure — but the atmosphere is so warm you almost want to call out “Tadaima!” (“I’m home!”) as you walk in ◎

Here’s the menu ☝
The shop sells Miki Monaka and yokan (sweet bean jelly). They’re divided into home-use packs and gift-use packs, and home-use monaka can be purchased one at a time ♪
[Miki Monaka]
・200 yen each
・Home-use packs start at 10 pieces (2,000 yen); gift-use packs start at 8 pieces (1,800 yen)
[Yanagiya Yokan]
・Five varieties: Hon-neri (classic), Awami (light sweetness), Ogura (chunky red bean), Matcha, and Kuro (black sugar) yokan
・2,000 yen per bar (boxing fee additional)

☝ These are the yokan. Sample bars are displayed right by the register (^○^)
You can also pick up gift boxes containing 2 or 3 yokan bars ◎

They also offer nationwide shipping within Japan, and you can pick up a shipping order form right at the counter ◎
Miki Monaka — Recommended Menu

This time I picked up the signature “Miki Monaka (200 yen)”

It’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand (^^)
Bite-sized, sure — but seriously hefty when you pick it up ◎

Break it in half and take a peek inside…
PACKED with anko ♡
Chunky tsubu-an (whole red bean paste) is stuffed from top to bottom with no gaps in sight!
You might be thinking, “That much sweet bean paste must be heavy and overly sweet, right?” — but trust me, it’s notttt!!
The wafer shell melts gently the moment it hits your tongue, and the anko itself is surprisingly light and easy to enjoy (^○^)
I happily polished mine off in two or three bites ♪

Flip the package over and check the back… no preservatives whatsoever ◎
Both the Miki Monaka and the yokan are made without any preservatives or artificial colorings. They’re also free of wheat flour, eggs, and dairy (according to the official website).
Wonderful news for travelers with allergies or dietary restrictions ♪
