Discovering MOMO’S HOUSE

Hello, travelers! I’m Mido ๐ŸŒณ, a writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’m excited to introduce you to MOMO’S HOUSE, a charming little bakery located in Waifu, Kikuchi City โ€” a wonderful detour for anyone exploring rural Kumamoto.

MOMO’S HOUSE opened last autumn, and the shop’s stylish logo immediately catches your eye โœจ This cozy spot specializes in handcrafted baked goods โ€” the kind of homey, lovingly made treats that are perfect for travelers wanting an authentic taste of small-town Japan.

Each week brings something special: freshly baked tarts on Wednesdays, and beautiful cakes on Fridays and Saturdays. I’d been dreaming about those tarts, so I made sure to drop by on a Wednesday ๐Ÿ‘จ

Let’s step inside!

A glass display case lines the left side, while the right counter is filled with rows of beautiful baked goods.

The interior plants and decorations are absolutely adorable ๐Ÿฅฐ
Browsing for sweets in this dreamy space is so much fun!

And here come the baked goodies!
So many varieties to choose from!

You’ll find block cookies, snowballs, oversized cookies, florentines, and more โœจ
The top shelf showcases beautiful pound cakes!
The Banana Pound Cake (190 yen / 205 yen incl. tax) is the bestseller โ€” and for good reason โ™ช

I visited just after White Day (a Japanese gift-giving holiday in March), so a few items were already sold out.
The back of the shop is dedicated to gift sets โ™ช
It was actually my first time seeing a sweets bouquet โ€” what a creative idea! ๐Ÿ‘€

This is the kind of gift that makes anyone smile!
Cookie box gift sets are also available!
The gift selection rotates seasonally to keep things exciting for returning customers. There’s a wide variety of gift boxes, and you can even build your own custom set with hand-picked treats!

Recommended Items at MOMO’S HOUSE

Out of all the wonderful baked goods at MOMO’S HOUSE, I picked the lemon cookies and chocolate cookies to bring home!

The chocolate cookies are a kid-favorite โ€” so much so that they were devoured before I could even snap a photo!

According to my little taste-tester, they were wonderfully crispy and absolutely delicious!

Time to taste the lemon cookies myself.

Crisp, crumbly, and oh-so-delicious… (I savored every bite, murmuring “yum, yum” the whole time!)
The sweetness is gentle and refined, with bits of lemon peel adding a bright, zesty accent.

From left to right: Chestnut & Sweet Potato Tart, Strawberry Tart, Blueberry & Cream Cheese Tart, and Chocolate Banana Tart.
Below them, the gorgeous Apple Pie โœจ

Every tart is generously packed with chunky, real ingredients โ€” so satisfying! โ™ช They were all absolutely delicious.

The shop owner is a mother herself, and you can taste the love in every treat. Her sweets are gentle, comforting, and beloved by kids and adults alike!
Whether you’re looking for a daily indulgence, a treat for a special occasion, or a heartfelt gift for someone special โ€” MOMO’S HOUSE has you covered.
