Welcome to Kashi Kobo Baobab

Hello travelers! This is Babinako,
your SaruKuma writer who refuses to be defeated by Japan’s summer heat.

Today I’m taking you to a charming little spot tucked away in Kuhara, Yamaga City —
Kashi Kobo Baobab (Baobab Confectionery).

This bakery is housed in a beautifully renovated traditional Japanese row house (nagaya), giving the exterior a wonderfully nostalgic, atmospheric feel — perfect for that authentic countryside Japan vibe.

Convenient parking is available right next to the building.

Step inside Kashi Kobo Baobab and you’ll find a clean, minimalist white interior.
Freshly baked breads line the wall shelves, filling the air with that irresistible just-out-of-the-oven aroma.

Baobab isn’t just about cookies and baked sweets — they offer a full range of breads too,
making it the perfect stop for a quick snack or afternoon treat during your Kumamoto travels.

I spotted seasonal favorites like Chestnut Bread (140 yen) — chestnuts (kuri) are a beloved autumn ingredient in Japan — alongside the slightly more indulgent Almond Chestnut Pie (420 yen).
You’ll also find a wide variety of savory and sweet breads, most priced around just 140 yen.

The refrigerated case features Pudding (200 yen) and Chiffon Cake (100 yen)
which happened to be cooling fresh from the oven during my visit.

Every single item at Kashi Kobo Baobab is wonderfully wallet-friendly — making it an ideal pit stop on a Kumamoto road trip.

When the Japanese summer heat gets the better of you, nothing beats something cold and refreshing.
These chilly options are absolutely perfect for cooling down on a hot day.

I was treated to a beautiful sample sweet — and what a treat it was!
A delightful crisp-then-tender texture with the perfect balance of sweet and tart.
Even though it was just a small sample, it left me craving more.

I went with the Coffee Set (600 yen) for my dine-in order.
It came with a charming little pound cake on the side — what a delightful bonus!

The freshly brewed coffee was beautifully smooth with low acidity — incredibly easy to drink.

Behold — the Ham & Cheese Bread.
The bread is practically drowning under a glorious mountain of cheese!

The salty cheese paired with the gentle sweetness of the bread is a classic combination that never disappoints.

And here’s the Sausage Bread.
My son absolutely adored it — he polished off most of it himself!

The soft, fluffy dough makes it easy for kids to enjoy, so it’s a great pick for families.

Here’s a delightful surprise — while we were relaxing, the staff offered us koi fish food, and my son and I dashed straight to the pond!
Watching the colorful koi munch away enthusiastically was so adorable that I just couldn’t stop feeding them.
I felt just like a doting grandma sneaking treats to her grandkids!

Kashi Kobo Baobab is a wonderfully warm, friendly, and welcoming place.
The staff are especially kind and patient with children, which makes it all too easy to lose track of time and stay a while longer.
