Hello there!
This is Binako, writer for SaruKuma!

Today I’m excited to introduce you to
a hidden gem in Komori, Nishihara Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Kano-no-Takumi Warabino” โ€” a traditional Japanese sweets shop you’ll want on your Kumamoto itinerary.

There are 4 parking spaces right in front of the shop.

When I visited, the front lot was full, so I parked around the back.

I checked with the staff, and they confirmed back parking is perfectly fine!

The freezer outside the shop offers takeaway warabi ice cream and karinto (Japanese fried dough sweets).

You’ll also find daigaku-imo (candied sweet potato) and ikinari dango (Kumamoto’s famous sweet potato dumpling) โ™ช

Inside the shop, there’s even more ikinari dango to choose from!

Red bean paste โ€” 1 piece

Purple sweet potato paste โ€” 1 piece

Set of 2 โ€” 260 yen

Sold individually โ€” 130 yen each

You can grab them one at a time too โ€” perfect for trying a single piece โ™ช

Sweet potato chips โ€” 350 yen

These are seriously delicious! โ˜…

Definitely worth picking up a bag โ€” you won’t regret it.

Inside the refrigerator, you’ll find their famous warabi mochi (Japanese bracken-starch jelly) in two flavors:

kinako (roasted soybean flour) and matcha (green tea) โ€” 2 varieties in total!

300g โ€” 540 yen

500g โ€” 850 yen

650g โ€” 1,080 yen

What a treat โ€” you can buy it by the gram, perfect for any group size โ™ช

And here’s the best part โ€” they offer warabi mochi samples!

What a wonderful surprise!
If you can’t decide on a flavor, just taste-test before you buy ( *ยด่‰ธ๏ฝ€)

There’s even more on the menu:

Sata andagi (Okinawan-style fried doughnuts)

1 piece โ€” 130 yen

5 pieces โ€” 540 yen

Miso peanuts

170g โ€” 540 yen

350g โ€” 1,080 yen

They all look absolutely irresistible!

You can also pick up brown sugar and ginger-infused brown sugar.
It’s lovely to find sugars that are good for your health, too.

Mekabu tea (seaweed tea) is on the shelves too!

I’m so curious โ€” what does mekabu tea taste like?

Inside, there’s a small eat-in corner with 3 seats ( *ยด่‰ธ๏ฝ€)

A relaxing spot to sit down and enjoy your treats.

They have classic soft serve too, and takeaway is available โ€” perfect for enjoying on the go โ˜…

This time I ordered the Warabi Soft Serve with Kinako โ€” 450 yen!

Look at all those chunks of warabi mochiโ€ฆ pure indulgence!

The warabi mochi is wonderfully chewy and bouncy โ€” absolutely heavenly.

And the soft serve? Light, creamy, and irresistible!

Together, the warabi mochi and soft serve create a
flavor combo that’s simply unbeatable.

And surprise โ€” there’s even more
warabi mochi hiding at the bottom!

Talk about a luxurious treat.

The kinako coating on the hidden warabi mochi melts into the soft serve,
transforming it into a kinako-flavored ice cream!

It’s so good you get to enjoy two completely different experiences in one cup ( *ยด่‰ธ๏ฝ€)

There are tables outside too,
so you can enjoy your treats al fresco โ™ช

The weather right now is absolutely perfect for it โ€” highly recommended!

Kids will love running around in the open space too (laughs).

With delicious warabi mochi, dreamy soft serve, and the kindest staff,
this is a must-visit spot during your Kumamoto trip!
