2020.07.21

A Sarukuma writer personally visits and reports on “Kojima Park” in Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City. We cover family-friendly highlights, access, and operating hours.
Hello, travelers!
I’m Saa-mama, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’d love to introduce you to
Kojima Park, located in Kojima, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture —
“Kojima Park” (小島公園).

The parking lot is wonderfully spacious.
The Kojima Community Center sits within the park grounds,
and there is also additional parking available on the community center side — perfect for families arriving by car.

There are restrooms on site, and yes — they include a diaper changing station too! A huge plus for families with babies.

The park is generously sized, with a walking course that loops the entire perimeter —

plus a sports ground and a covered rest area where you can take a break in the shade. It’s a lovely spot to cool down on warm Kumamoto afternoons!

Three drinking fountains are spread throughout the spacious park,
and there’s also a vending machine near the Kojima Community Center for grabbing a refreshing drink.
Highlights of Kojima Park

Rare Kumamon-themed playground equipment!
Kumamon — Kumamoto’s beloved black bear mascot — is everywhere here, and kids absolutely lose their minds with excitement!

Kojima Park has a dedicated toddler play area,
surrounded by a low fence so little ones can play safely. A wonderful feature for parents with younger children!

Inside, you’ll find a large seesaw and a smaller seesaw, plus benches and spring-rider toys —
all featuring adorable Kumamon designs that make this area irresistibly photogenic.

Because the toddler area is fenced in,
adults can relax on the Kumamon-themed benches while keeping an eye on the little ones.

Beyond that, there’s also a sandbox and an elephant-shaped slide,

plus athletic playground equipment for older kids.

When I returned to Kojima Park after a while away,
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the older equipment had been replaced with brand-new, charming pieces!

Walking around to the other side, I discovered monkey bars too!
The bars are set at a low height — just right for little ones learning the ropes —
and my child was working hard at practicing while we were there.

With its delightful Kumamon playground equipment that thrills children
and baby-friendly amenities throughout, Kojima Park is a true family treasure in Kumamoto.
