πŸ“Œ What you’ll learn in this article
A Sarukuma writer visits “Tabaruzaka Manju” in Kumamoto and shares a firsthand report. We’ve also gathered family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Kumamoto is now firmly in the rainy season, and many of the outings we’d been looking forward to have been put on hold!

Why not enjoy a leisurely drive paired with some delicious steamed buns to satisfy a small craving?

The shop we’re introducing today is about a 30-minute drive from central Kumamoto City, located right in front of the entrance to Tabaruzaka Park along Prefectural Route 31.

Inside the shop, you’ll find a wonderful selection of fresh local vegetables and fruits on display, but most customers actually come for the handmade steamed buns.

This time, we picked up the popular “Manju” (left) and “Kimchi” (right) varieties.

For the price, they’re seriously generous in size! The manju on the left is about the size of a convenience store nikuman, and the kimchi bun is roughly twice as large!

The kimchi bun is filled with homemade kimchi, glass noodles, kikurage (wood-ear mushrooms), shiitake mushrooms, and pork.

The manju has a lightly sweet smooth red bean paste with a subtle hint of sake aroma β€” a wonderful balance.
