Introducing Tei-no-Moto (ใฆใใฎใใจ)
Hello, travelers! I’m Asukarando, a writer for [SaruKuma].
Today I’m introducing a special spot located in Mitsugu-machi, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City:
Tei-no-Moto (ใฆใใฎใใจ).
Dago-jiru is one of Kumamoto’s most beloved local specialties โ a hearty soup with hand-shaped wheat dumplings.
And I went to try the dago-jiru set meal at “Tei-no-Moto” โ let me show you around (*^.^*)
The parking lot is right next to the road โ easy to find.
Here’s the entrance to “Tei-no-Moto” (*^.^*)
Walk down the small path and a charming, understated building begins to appear.
And here it is โ “Tei-no-Moto”!
You step in through this small traditional sliding door (^^)
The entrance has an old-fashioned doma (earthen-floor space) where you take off your shoes before stepping up โ a classic Japanese touch.
Seating is split between horigotatsu (sunken-floor) tables and traditional tatami zashiki seating, with gorgeous large wooden tables that set the mood beautifully.
The huge windows look out onto a gorgeous bamboo grove, and watching the sunlight ripple across the water outside is genuinely soothing โ I felt myself relax even before the food arrived (>.<)y-~
Even the menu booklet at “Tei-no-Moto” perfectly matches the atmosphere of the restaurant (^^)

Tei-no-Moto (ใฆใใฎใใจ) Recommended Menu
Of course, I went with the classic dago-jiru set meal!
It arrives as a generous bowl of dago-jiru with rice, salt-grilled mackerel, shira-ae (tofu salad), namasu (pickled daikon and carrot), and a small dessert โ what a satisfying spread (>.<)y-~
Dago-jiru is famous all over Kumamoto, but every restaurant has its own twist on the recipe!
At “Tei-no-Moto,” the broth is soy sauce-based โ a gentle, comforting dashi that’s absolutely delicious (^^)
Surprisingly, big chunks of kikurage (wood ear mushroom) are tucked inside the soup as well!
It was my first time having kikurage in dago-jiru, and the satisfying crunchy texture was wonderfully addictive.
The dago dumplings themselves are a soft, chewy, long, thick variety โ exactly the kind of comforting carb you crave on a cool day.
The vegetable pieces are generously sized, giving every bite real substance (^^)
The bottom of the bowl is packed with even more dago dumplings โ there’s plenty to share with the kids and still leave everyone full.
The shira-ae was creamy and elegantly flavored.
The red-and-white namasu had a refreshing twist of yuzu citrus, perfectly bright and clean.
The salt-grilled mackerel had crisp skin and just the right amount of seasoning โ a perfect partner for steamed white rice (^^)
Family-friendly bonus: kids’ tableware is available, rice refills are free, and plain white rice is offered so children can have whichever option suits them best.
The rice was so good my kids kept asking for refill after refill (>.<)y-~
The staff also brought a children’s chair without us even asking โ so thoughtful and helpful for families!
After the meal, we ordered a serving of zenzai (sweet red bean soup) for dessert.
Lightly sweet azuki beans wrapped around soft, flat mochi rice cakes โ absolutely delicious!
It’s such a kid-friendly take on zenzai that my children ended up eating my entire bowlโฆ
The dago-jiru set meal at “Tei-no-Moto” was wonderful, and next time I want to try the salt-grilled mackerel set.
The owner’s wife told us, “Please don’t hesitate to bring your kids โ you’re always welcome here!”
