Welcome to Miyazono Onsen
Hello, travelers!
This is Igaguri 🌰, writing for Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to
Miyazono Onsen, a charming local bathhouse located in
Shimoyoshida, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

Miyazono Onsen is right near “Kumairi Onsen Center,” which we featured in a previous article.

Just look at that classic, unmistakably hot-spring vibe! 😊

There’s plenty of parking — no need to stress about finding a spot!

A “flowing-water walking bath”…? What on earth could that be?

Cigarettes are sold near the entrance.
Smoking is permitted in the open-air bath area.

Everywhere else is non-smoking. The smoking spot is the bench you can see on the back left.
Now let’s head inside!

Wait — what?!
It’s barely past the 12:00 opening time and only four rooms are still available…!
(Because I was busy snapping photos, I ended up being the very last customer to check in.)
Rooms 1–13 come with a private open-air bath for ¥1,700.
Rooms 15 and 16 (no open-air bath) are ¥1,000.
Hmm? But what’s a “flowing-water private rental”…?

This time we picked Room 5, which includes a private open-air bath.
(My little one absolutely loves ticket vending machines!)

Here’s the reception desk.

The retro atmosphere is totally that classic Japanese bathhouse feel!
What Makes Miyazono Onsen Special

So THIS is the famous “flowing-water walking bath”!!!
Whaaat — no way!
In other words, it’s basically a warm onsen lazy river?!
And on weekends, you can actually rent the whole thing privately?!?!
You can even bring your own inner tube!
(On weekdays the area is mixed-gender, so swimsuits are required.)

This time, since my child is only three and a half, we went with the family bath (a private rental tub) at the back of the building instead.

The rooms are arranged on both sides of the corridor, and Room 5 was right in the middle — closest to the entrance!

The changing area is roomy and comfortable!

The hairdryer had nice strong airflow, too. ☺

The air conditioner is coin-operated (extra fee).

Miyazono Onsen uses 100% pure spring water, kept at a comfortable, lukewarm temperature.

A “reclining bath”… what’s that, exactly?
Let’s take a look at the bath itself!

This is the indoor bath.

A non-slip mat is provided too — great for safety!

And here’s the open-air bath!!
Ahh, I see — the lower section is shallower so you can lie back and soak. That’s the “reclining bath” zone!
Brilliant design!!

By the way, all of the rooms have the same layout, so there’s no need to agonize over which one to pick! ☆
The water has a wonderfully silky, slightly slippery texture that leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth (⋈◍>◡<◍).✧♡

Both the indoor and outdoor baths have a hot-water tap so you can adjust the temperature to your liking.
Just a heads-up: turning it on too much can reduce the shower’s water pressure!

Body soap and shampoo are NOT provided, so don’t forget to bring your own! ☆

You get a 60-minute time limit.
It’s all done the old-school way — there’s no in-room phone call to remind you when time’s up.

If you set the clock and time chart facing the bath like this, you can keep an eye on the time while you soak. ☺

The post-bath relaxation lounge.

They even have Anpanman-themed juice for the kids! 🎵

Right next to that is the large public bath.
Reception is on the right. ☆
Whether you visit solo or as a family, give that famous flowing-water walking bath a try!
If you find yourself in Yamaga, definitely add Miyazono Onsen to your itinerary. ⭐
