Welcome to Heisei 3-chome Park

Today I’m taking you to a charming neighborhood gem located in Heisei, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
Heisei 3-chome Park (平成三丁目公園).The park is just a 5-minute walk from JR Heisei Station. Note that there is no on-site parking, so public transport or walking is your best bet.
The park has three different entrances, so you can enter from whichever side is most convenient.

This particular entrance sits right alongside the JR Hohi Main Line railway tracks.
There’s also a vending machine right by this entrance — perfect for grabbing a refreshing drink on a hot day.

Chigusa Nursery School is located directly across the street, so you’ll often hear the cheerful voices of little ones drifting through the air. ♪
There’s a covered bench area where you can take a break out of the sun.
The grassy open field is fantastic for games of tag — we had a blast running around!

Here’s a fun bit of local trivia: this park, Heisei 3-chome Park, is in Chuo Ward (Central Ward), but the nearby Heisei 2-chome Park is actually in Minami Ward (South Ward).

Same neighborhood name, different ward — Kumamoto’s geography can be surprisingly intricate! 😄
The grass field is shared with the local community center next door.
There are three benches lined up here, perfect for a picnic break or supervising the little ones.Here’s the restroom, which has a clock mounted on it — handy for keeping track of time.
Heads up for international visitors: this is a traditional Japanese-style (squat) unisex toilet.
There’s also a drinking fountain and hand-washing station right next to the restroom.

Top Reasons to Visit Heisei 3-chome Park

The playground equipment for younger children was completely renewed in February 2024, so everything is sparkling new and clean!
The rope climbing structure is designed to be easy enough for even 2-year-olds to enjoy. ♪
There’s a posted notice reminding parents that children aged 3 to 6 must always be accompanied by an adult.
There’s also a generous-sized sandbox for hours of digging fun.
Two adorable spring riders — a panda and a lion — are waiting to be ridden.
And here’s the absolute biggest highlight of this park: trains run RIGHT in front of it!!!

You get a perfect, unobstructed view of both inbound and outbound JR Hohi Main Line trains as they roll past.Train-loving kids stand wide-eyed at the fence, waving excitedly as each train zooms by.

It’s such a magical, almost VIP-style view!!
When a train passes through, the excitement is so real that you’ll want to lean over the fence yourself just to catch a better look!
