Introducing Marirumi Shokudo

This time I ventured down to Yatsushiro on a gourmet hunt.

Today I’m introducing a charming little spot in Tanaka-Kitamachi, Yatsushiro City called
[Marirumi Shokudo].

Tucked just off Rinko Line into a quiet residential neighborhood, this is a cozy eatery run single-handedly by its owner.

The stylish blue door immediately catches your eye at the entrance.

Even the signage has a perfectly on-point design — absolutely adorable.

There are 3 parking spots in front of the restaurant. Beyond these, you’ll need to use a paid parking lot a short distance away.

Inside you’ll find 3 table seats plus a bar counter.

The lighting and wallpaper are wonderfully chic. I just had to ask the owner where they sourced the design.

Here’s the set meal and à la carte menu.
All set meals are 990 yen, including the cabbage roll set, fried chicken (karaage) set, ginger pork set, grilled fish set, and mixed fry set.
For reference, the fish of the day on my visit was salted mackerel (shio-saba).

The à la carte menu is packed with dishes that pair beautifully with sake!
They’re open in the evenings too, with a sake tasting set and an extensive selection of Japanese drinks.

A free glass of beer 🍺 every visit?!

I was driving on this trip so I had to skip it, but apparently
anyone who orders a single dish (lunch or à la carte)
gets one complimentary glass of draft beer per person!
What a delightful bonus.

Marirumi Shokudo’s Recommended Menu

I went with the Cabbage Roll Set Meal (990 yen).

Cabbage rolls in demi-glace sauce — they look incredible!
The set comes with a salad and soup, making it a wonderfully balanced meal.

Itadakimasu!

These cabbage rolls are hand-rolled fresh every morning by the owner.
Finding cabbage rolls in demi-glace sauce in Japan is quite rare — definitely a treat!

Slice it open!
It’s absolutely packed with juicy meat!
The cabbage is meltingly tender and naturally sweet — it disappears in seconds.

I couldn’t resist spooning the demi-glace sauce right onto my rice.
Forgive my table manners!
But trust me — it makes the rice utterly irresistible!

Then there’s the side dish: simmered chicken wings (tebasaki-ni).
Despite being a side, it stole the spotlight.
Slow-simmered in a soy-based broth until fall-off-the-bone tender, it’s light yet rich with deep umami flavor.
It completely redefined my idea of simmered chicken wings. Absolutely incredible.
