Introducing 3-ji no Anko

Hello travelers! This is Suno, writer for [SaruKuma].

Today I’m excited to introduce a hidden gem in Jonoura-machi, Uto City
[3-ji no Anko] (which translates to “3 O’Clock Sweet Bean Paste”).Just a 3-minute walk from Uto Station, you’ll find the shop next to the Cosmos Drugstore Uto Station branch and a gas station — easy to spot for any visitor exploring this charming corner of Kumamoto Prefecture.Look out for the “Open” banner waving outside — that’s your signal to come in!
Here’s a fun fact that makes this place truly special: the building normally operates as a daycare service for the elderly during the week, and the donut shop only opens on Sundays. It’s a rare find that locals treasure! There’s a small parking area at 3-ji no Anko with space for 2-3 cars — convenient for travelers exploring the area by rental car.Place your order at this cozy little window!
Half the fun is the anticipation as you wait for your fresh, hot-from-the-fryer donuts.

Even after a recent price update, the prices here are still incredibly reasonable!
The famous an-donut (sweet bean paste donut) is just 100 yen — pocket change for a memorable taste of Japan!

They also offer rotating special menu items! Sadly, they were sold out on this visit.
On a previous trip, I had the chance to try the an-butter (sweet bean paste with butter) donut — absolutely divine!

3-ji no Anko Recommended Menu

Look at that adorable round shape!
My personal favorite — the Potachee Donut at ¥150 (tax included), a savory creation with potato and cheese.

Fluffy potato, melty cheese, and savory bacon — pure comfort food!Just look at that gorgeous, gooey cheese pull — your appetite will thank you!
Pro tip: if you’re taking these to go, the cheese will firm up over time. Just pop them in the microwave for 20-30 seconds and they’ll taste freshly made again!Classic An-Donut for just ¥100!
Made with 100% Hokkaido bread flour, free-range eggs, domestic Japanese butter, rice oil, and other premium ingredients — all without any additives, completely handmade. The fact that you can enjoy this quality at such a price is honestly incredible.

One bite and your mouth fills with the gentle, comforting sweetness of smooth koshi-an (strained red bean paste) — a true taste of traditional Japan!

Ikinari Donut ¥150
This Kumamoto-inspired creation features the same high-quality sweet bean paste plus a generous chunk of sweet potato (“karaimo” in the local dialect) — incredibly satisfying and a wonderful introduction to Kumamoto’s beloved “ikinari dango” tradition!

Open Sundays only from 8:00 AM until sold out — we highly recommend calling to reserve on the morning of your visit (phone reservations only)

Travelers, why not make a sweet detour to Uto on Sunday and pick up some delicious donuts from “3-ji no Anko” for your day’s adventures around Kumamoto?
