Introducing Batatas Sweet Potato Specialty Shop

It’s Binako, a writer for Sarukuma — and yes, I just stuffed myself silly on nuts again!

Today, I’m taking you to a real hidden gem in Muro, Ozu Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Batatas Sweet Potato Specialty Shop.”

Batatas’s products are sold inside the previously featured
“Kyushu no Shokutaku Select Shop,” a wonderful little store packed with carefully chosen Kyushu goods.

Batatas used to be reservation-only, but now they sell to walk-in customers too — so I dashed over there in pure excitement!

Parking is available right in front of the shop at space No. 12, plus an additional lot in the back.

Here’s the back parking area.
Even the parking lot looks stylish!

You can walk straight through from the back, so just follow this path.

There’s an entrance on your left, so you can also pop in from this side.

Inside, you’ll find loads of fresh local vegetables for sale too — perfect for picking up some Kyushu produce while you’re there.

This “Okimochi Yasai” (pay-as-you-feel veggies) is one of my favorites — I’m definitely grabbing some next time!

And there, sitting proudly on the register counter, is today’s main event — Batatas!

This is Batatas’s signature sweet potato (1,814 yen)!

I’ve been waiting to meet you, little one!

Eating instructions are kindly included in the package.

First, I tried the microwave-heated version.

Oh my — the aroma of sweet potato is absolutely incredible.
The scent alone gets your appetite going.

The texture is wonderfully moist with a gentle, natural sweetness.
There’s a layer of pie crust at the bottom, and that buttery-flaky accent is perfection.

A sweet potato that melts in your mouth without even chewing — a first for me!

And here it is warmed up in the toaster oven.
Maybe a touch over-toasted…?

Unlike the microwave version, this one has that lovely crisp finish.
Crispy on the outside, melt-in-your-mouth soft on the inside.
I thought I’d toasted it a bit too long, but honestly, I might love it this way even more.
The pie base is delightfully crunchy too.

The natural sweetness of the sweet potato spreading through your mouth is
genuinely soothing for the soul.
It’s the kind of treat you’ll crave on a tired day — the perfect pick-me-up.
My son couldn’t get enough either!
