Introducing Amakusa Shiro Park
Hello travelers! This is Suno, writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to Oyano-machi in Kamiamakusa City, home to
Amakusa Shiro Park.
As you drive from central Kumamoto City toward the Amakusa area, colorful playground equipment will appear on your left β that’s your cue!
It sits right across from “Michi-no-Eki Sunpearl” roadside station, so it’s super easy to spot.
Nearby you’ll also find “Hanamizuki Country Park,” which we’ve previously featured on Sarukuma.
The park is paired with the “Ikotto Book and History Exchange Hall,” which opened on October 1, 2023, and there’s free parking for over 30 cars!
There are spacious, clean covered benches too, perfect for parents on watch duty to take a breather!
Right next to the benches you’ll find hand-washing stations and water fountains.
Two vending machines are on-site, plus shaded benches.
Restrooms are inside the Ikotto building (with diaper-changing tables, a nursing room, and even a diaper vending machine!) β incredibly family-friendly!
Why Amakusa Shiro Park Is a Must-Visit
Walk in from the parking lot and the first thing you’ll notice is the giant blue-and-white combo playground at the center of the park!
One look and the excitement is real.
Because it features tricky jungle-gym footholds and a tunnel slide, the recommended age range is posted as 6β12 years old.
Right next to it is a big, gently sloping slide.
Classic Amakusa! There’s even dolphin-shaped equipment β a nod to the area’s famous wild dolphins!
Crabs, whales β you name it.
The whole ocean-themed design is just irresistible!
This area is designed for younger children, so my 2-year-old daughter could play here without worry!
The kids were shouting “Nemo! Nemo!” β too cute!
Another wide slide is over here.
The stairs are a bit of a hike from the slide, so the older boys were charging straight up the small slope next to it β just keep an eye on little ones!
Since the park is right by the sea, the wind can really pick up β packing a light jacket is a smart move.
(Our family ended up running back to the car for one!)
Even the swings have an adorable dolphin design!
The grounds also include the Oyano Library, a local history museum, and a scenic lookout plaza!
Grab a bento or snacks at Michi-no-Eki Sunpearl across the street, and spend the day at Amakusa Shiro Park β fun for everyone from preschoolers to grown-ups!
