Welcome to Ominato Park
Hello, travelers!
This is Igaguri, your Saru Kuma writer 🌰
Today we’re exploring
“Ominato Park,” tucked away in Mutta, Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture — a charming neighborhood park that’s a hidden gem for visitors looking to experience local Japanese life.

The park has three entrances to choose from!

Entrance #1 is marked by a striking sphere sculpture.
Right next door (to the left) you’ll find Discount Drug Cosmos Mutta Branch — perfect for grabbing snacks, drinks, or any travel essentials.

This appears to be a commemorative completion monument.
If you head toward the back (in the direction of the Kikuchi River)…

…you’ll reach Entrance #2, which has restrooms and a hand-washing station.

Heads up for international visitors: the toilets are traditional Japanese-style squat toilets — a fun cultural experience in itself!

And the third entrance…

…features palm trees that give it a tropical resort vibe!
Though Cosmos drugstore is still very much in view next door — talk about a perfect mix of relaxation and convenience.
Now, let’s step inside!
What Makes Ominato Park Special

Playground equipment spotted!

A cute sheep and snail (and there’s also a little bird, just out of frame).

And a small plastic slide.
…That’s all for the playground equipment.
BUT! Here’s where the real magic begins!

The park is bursting with a wonderful variety of trees — a botanical wonderland!

Chinese Tallow Tree (Nankin Haze).

Sujidai (a Japanese chinkapin oak).

Kobushi Magnolia.

Kurogane Holly.

Japanese Bayberry (Yamamomo).
This reminded me of a nearby cake shop called “Hanamomo” (literally “flower peach”) — though I’m not sure if there’s any connection!

Japanese Stewartia (Natsutsubaki).

Sasanqua Camellia.

Yoshino Cherry (Someiyoshino).
Yes, the iconic Japanese cherry blossom tree is here too — making this a lovely spot during sakura season!

You’ll feel like a botanical expert by the time you leave!

There’s even a little hill with an adventure trail.

Kids absolutely love spaces like these — anywhere their curiosity can be sparked (*^^)v
Even without elaborate playground equipment, a child’s imagination turns this space into endless adventures.
That creative energy kids bring is truly something to behold!

While the kids explore, plenty of benches mean adults can relax and enjoy the moment ☆

There’s no on-site parking, so here’s our travel hack: park at Cosmos drugstore for shopping while one parent enjoys the park with the kids — a perfect Japanese suburban experience!
Across from Cosmos, you’ll also find Sendo Ichiba Tamana (a fresh market), plus a hair salon, convenience store, and cafés ♡
A handy tip for traveling families ✋!
While the kids burn energy at the park, give one parent some well-deserved solo time at the nearby shops — everyone wins!
