About Kenmotsudai Arboretum

Hello, lovely travelers!
This is Maru, your friendly Sarukuma writer πŸ™‚πŸ˜…

Today, I’m taking you to Ninomaru, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City, where you’ll find
Kenmotsudai Arboretum (η›£η‰©ε°ζ¨Ήζœ¨εœ’).
It’s pronounced “Kenmotsudai Jumokuen”!

* This botanical garden is home to roughly 2,000 flowering plants, bonsai, and trees.
It has a charmingly weathered, lived-in feel β€” perfect if you’re looking for a quiet escape from the bustle of the city 😊

The arboretum sits within the grounds of Kumamoto Castle Park, but it’s tucked away in such a quiet spot that even some locals don’t know it’s there (Β΄βˆ€ο½€)

Climb the steep slope toward Kato Shrine, and…

…you’ll be greeted by cherry blossoms in full bloom 🌸
The path on the left leads to Kato Shrine, while the arboretum is on your right.
It’s also right next to Ninomaru Plaza!

Here are the admission fees.
Adults: 200 yen. Free for elementary and junior high students πŸ‘¦πŸ‘§

The garden map.

A handy board lets you know which seasonal flowers and trees are currently in bloom!

Stop by the reception desk here first!

A short walk to the left brings you to the restrooms. This is the only restroom inside the garden.
There’s no diaper-changing station, but it has a baby chair and Western-style toilets!

And here’s a cool surprise β€” a vintage forestry locomotive!
You can’t ride it, but it’s on display for everyone to admire.

Highlights of Kenmotsudai Arboretum

Now let’s take a closer look at the plants (Β΄βˆ€ο½€)

The garden’s iconic Washington palm tree towers majestically overhead. In the foreground, bonsai are paired with tulips 🌷
This unexpected blend of Japanese and Western styles creates a delightfully whimsical atmosphere. Personally, I love it πŸ˜„

So colorful… spring is in full swing 🌷

Every plant has a name tag, so it’s perfect for learning together with kids as you stroll πŸ‘¦πŸ‘§
Some even include short descriptions of the flowers β™ͺ

Now, can you guess which flower this is?

A magnificent weeping cherry tree (shidare-zakura) 🌸

The garden is filled with several varieties of cherry blossoms in bloom. They’re absolutely beautiful and incredibly relaxing 🌸
Throughout the year, you can also enjoy roses, wisteria trellises, trumpet vines, and other seasonal flowers 🌼*ο½₯

Benches are scattered throughout the garden, so you can take your time and savor the views!
You’re even welcome to bring your own bento (^O^)

There are quiet little nooks like this one too.

Beyond the flowers, there’s also a wide variety of trees β€” including some seriously massive onesοΌΌ(^o^)/

Look up at the towering loblolly pine (Teada-matsu) treeπŸƒπŸŒ±

A collection of pinecones gathered from the tree.

Look at this!!! A giant pinecone the size of a human palm 😲

You’ll find fun quiz-style signs scattered throughout: “What tree is this?”

A tree with smooth, white bark πŸƒπŸŒ± β€” what could it be?

The answer: a Shimasarusuberi (Lagerstroemia subcostata) tree πŸƒπŸŒ±
The Japanese name literally means “monkey-slipping tree” β€” perhaps because its bark is so slick, even monkeys would slide off? πŸ’

It feels like taking a peaceful stroll through a forest πŸŒ³πŸƒ
