Welcome to Aso Uma Bokujo Horse Ranch

Hello, travelers!
It’s Binako, your Sarukuma writer, here to share another Kumamoto adventure with you.

Today I’m taking you to Aso Uma Bokujo, a charming little horse ranch tucked away in Nagakusa, Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture—one of the most scenic countryside areas in Kyushu.

My son recently saw horseback riding on TV and immediately said, “I want to try that too!” So we hopped online, found this lovely ranch, and headed out together with hearts full of excitement.

Free parking is available right in front of the building, making arrival a breeze.

Inside the welcome building, you’ll find adorable handmade pouches for sale.

The owner uses unique fabrics sourced from overseas, and many feature charming horse illustrations—perfect souvenirs from your trip to Aso.

The leather strap details are a really nice touch, too.

You’ll also spot some cute horse figurines on display.
Can you find Kumamon (Kumamoto’s beloved black bear mascot) hiding among the horses?

There’s even a fun horse toy that neighs when you press its ears.

My son absolutely loved it. He kept pressing the ears and pretending to gallop along, shouting “Clip-clop, clip-clop!”

Don’t miss meeting Marin-chan, the friendly resident Dalmatian.
She’s incredibly sociable and adorable—a real crowd-pleaser with kids.

Why Aso Uma Bokujo Is a Must-Visit

Walk a little further in and you’ll find the horseback riding course waiting for you.

Here are the riding experience options and prices.

The “Lead-Horse Tandem Ride” allows parents and small children to ride together,
making this an incredibly special place where even the youngest visitors can connect with these gentle animals.

For more adventurous riders, the outdoor trail ride takes you on a relaxing horseback hike beyond the ranch—a great way to soak in the gorgeous Aso scenery.

Since it was my son’s first time, we chose the tandem ride (1,500 yen).

You step up onto a small platform to mount the horse safely.

The owner kindly walked us through every detail,
so even my little one settled into the saddle with no fuss at all.

Clip-clop, clip-clop…

The gentle rocking motion thrilled my son,
who squealed with joy the entire ride.

The staff even took photos for us during the ride—really thoughtful service.
The tandem ride takes you twice around the course.

After our ride, my son announced, “I want to catch a roly-poly bug!”

So everyone joined in on a little pill bug hunt around the property.
A huge thank you to the staff for searching with us.
On our way out, they even gave us a small bag to keep the bugs from escaping in the car—talk about service!
It would have been a disaster if they’d gotten loose during the drive home.

Whether for kids or for the whole family,
we had such a precious and wonderful time together!

The owner and staff are warm, friendly, and so welcoming
that we couldn’t help but feel right at home.

If you’re visiting Aso on a sunny day, why not give horseback riding a try with your little ones? It’s an experience you won’t forget.
