📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
Our Sarukuma writer visited Yawata Park in Yawata-cho, Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Here you’ll find family-friendly tips, access details, and opening hours — plus a delightful surprise at the shrine right next door!

Welcome to Yawata Park

Hello, travelers! I’m Kanao, a writer for Sarukuma 🌱

Today, I’m taking you to a charming neighborhood gem tucked away in Yawata-cho, Minamata City
Yawata Park (八幡公園)!

This is a quintessential local park — modest in size, but packed with classic playground equipment like slides and swings that kids absolutely love ♪

A quick heads-up: the slide’s staircase is fairly tall, and each step has noticeable height between them.

The handrails and steps have open gaps, so there’s a chance little feet could slip through or hands could lose their grip.
If you’re visiting with younger children, please keep a close eye on them as they climb!

When my son climbed up all by himself and started dancing at the top, my heart was racing — please come down NOW!!! (every parent will relate, I’m sure 😅)

You’ll also find a compact jungle gym

horizontal bars at varying heights

…and swings with vibrant, beautifully colored seats!

Is this a horse? Or maybe a lion?
There’s also a unique animal-themed seesaw — you don’t see this style every day! ◎

A bench near the entrance offers a nice spot to take a breather ◎
Even in a small park, having a place to sit and rest makes all the difference for visiting parents (^^)

The Highlight of Yawata Park

Out of every piece of equipment, this was my son’s absolute favorite!!

A wonderfully colorful spinner in blue, red, yellow, and white ♡

You sit in the seat and spin around — total fun! ◎

Just like a teacup ride, you can spin yourself, or have a friend or parent push you for an even faster whirl!

Right next door, you’ll find Yawata Shrine (Hachimangu).

Step inside, and… prepare for a delightful surprise!

There are TURTLES — so many adorable turtles!!! 🐢

I’ve never seen so many turtles gathered in one place — it’s truly a sight to behold ◎

A small platform has been set up so little ones can peek over and see the turtles up close ◎
While we were there, other families were also enjoying turtle-watching together — it’s a wonderfully wholesome scene!

Yawata Shrine has its own parking lot, so why not pay your respects, meet the turtles, and let the kids run wild at Yawata Park — all in one trip? It’s a perfect little stop for travelers exploring southern Kumamoto (^^)
