Introducing Jabu-Jabu Pond

Hello there! This is Asukarando, a writer for [SaruKuma].

Today I’m excited to introduce a hidden gem located in Jinsui-honmachi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City
[Jabu-Jabu Pond] (the name literally means “Splish-Splash Pond”)!

With Japan’s summers getting hotter every year, finding a way to cool off has become essential. That’s exactly why I headed to Jabu-Jabu Pond for some refreshing relief! (^-^)v

The Ezu Lake Spring Waters

Ezu Lake is the largest spring-fed pond in Kumamoto City.

The springs around Ezu Lake bubble up from abundant groundwater stored in the geological layers formed by Mt. Aso’s massive eruptions. The area has been recognized as one of Japan’s “Heisei 100 Famous Waters” β€” a prestigious national designation for outstanding water sources!

From the city tram street, just turn into the residential area and you’ll quickly spot the parking lot β€” easy to find!

Parking lot hours: 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM

There are vending machines in the parking area, including one that sells ice cream β€” perfect for a cool treat after splashing around in the water!

Right next to the parking lot, you’ll see a smaller, shallow pond.

It’s perfect for families with very young children!

On the opposite side of the parking lot, you’ll find the main ‘Jabu-Jabu Pond’ itself!

Restrooms are located about 70 meters from the parking lot.
Except for the multipurpose restroom, the main facilities are on the second floor up a flight of stairs.

The multipurpose restroom is well-equipped with a child-sized toilet seat and a baby changing table, so diaper changes are no problem here.

Behind ‘Jabu-Jabu Pond’, there’s a wide open space with benches and covered rest areas.

The area is dotted with shady trees, and visitors were happily spreading out picnic mats in their favorite spots!

Top Highlights of Jabu-Jabu Pond

Just look at that crystal-clear spring water β€” can you see how transparent it is in the photos?

You can actually watch the water bubbling up from below β€” a magical sight! (*^.^*)

And let me tell you β€” this water is shockingly cold!!!

One moment you’re sweating buckets, and the next, you’re instantly refreshed and cool!

The waterside is lined with leafy trees that provide plenty of natural shade β€” perfect for staying cool while you enjoy the view! (^-^)v

The shallow areas are only 1–5 cm deep, so even babies who can sit up were happily playing in the water!

Even in the deeper-looking areas, the water only reaches about an adult’s knee β€” but please, always supervise children closely so everyone can enjoy a safe and fun day out.

Seriously, the water is SO cold!!

It’s like swimming in ice water!!!

But you’ll get used to it quickly, and before long you’ll be swimming around comfortably! (^-^)v

Bringing along a swim ring makes it even more fun! \(^_^)(^_^)/

Goggles and snorkels are highly recommended too! My son tried snorkeling and was completely amazed β€” “It’s so beautiful underwater!” he said. (^^)

Ezu Lake is home to a wide variety of aquatic creatures.
Bringing a net and bucket can make your visit even more enjoyable! (*^.^*)

It’s a fantastic spot for observing wildlife! (^-^)v

We encountered so many fascinating creatures during our visit! (^-^)v

Important note: Ezu Lake is home to many native species, but also several invasive ones.
If you catch any invasive species, please do NOT release them back into the lake β€” instead, place them in the special collection boxes provided! (^^)

There are warning signs posted around the area as well! Ezu Lake is also home to many unique plant species.
The rare ‘Himebaikamo’ plant, native to Ezu Lake, is sadly considered to be at risk of extinction in the near future.
Let’s all do our part to protect this precious environment! (^^)

There’s even a charming swing nestled among the trees β€” what a beautiful natural setting!

Kumamoto’s summer heat shows no signs of letting up! Come escape the heat and explore nature at ‘Jabu-Jabu Pond’! (*^.^*)
