Today we’re heading to
Nishidera in Kikuchi City, Kumamoto, to visit
“Pan to Okashi no Tokowaka” (Tokowaka Bread & Sweets).

Look for the cheerful blue-painted shop — you can’t miss it!

I’d been curious about this place every time I drove past, and finally caught it open. Time for a visit!

Their open days are:

Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday

8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

There’s a clear “Open” sign by the road, so it’s easy to spot even while driving.

Inside, the shelves are filled with all kinds of bread!
From savory sōzai-pan (Japanese-style filled bread) to sweet pastries — there’s something for everyone.

Lunch options include:

Spicy Roast Chicken Sandwich – 290 yen

Mushroom-Loaded Meat Sauce Bread – 290 yen

All this for just 290 yen!

They also have bagels!

With four varieties to choose from, bagel lovers can stock up on a few. At 160–170 yen each, they’re easy on the wallet too.

You’ll also find dinner rolls and milk bread.

These cute little buns are
just 70 yen each — perfect for snacking!

I can already imagine pairing these with a warm bowl of potage soup for breakfast.

The loaf bread (Japanese-style shokupan) selection is impressive too:

The orange loaf is a rare find — definitely something different to try!

I want to try every single one, side by side.

Definitely a paradise for anyone with a sweet tooth.

They also serve muffins and scones, making this a great spot for a relaxed tea time.

Looks gloriously American and tempting — it’s an oatmeal cookie packed with goodies!

Bagel Sandwich with Cream Cheese – 200 yen

Ham, Cheese & Veggie Sandwich – 250 yen

The sandwich I mentioned earlier is a weekly special, so the flavor changes each week — something to look forward to every visit!

They even serve ginger ale!

Now that’s a refreshing pairing I want to try.

What I Tried

This time I picked up:

Bagel – 160 yen

Cowboy Cookie – 180 yen

Scone – 180 yen

Just look at this beautifully round, dense bagel.

A full moon at lunchtime!

Crispy on the outside, soft yet hearty on the inside — this is a true chewy, satisfying bagel.

Every bite releases a deep wheaty flavor that keeps you reaching for more.

Delicious plain, toasted, or made into a sandwich — you really can’t go wrong.

Next up: the Cowboy Cookie.

Soft, moist, and chewy — packed with chocolate chips and dried fruit.

Honestly? It’s incredible.

Rich, sweet, and the perfect afternoon treat.

Loaded with chocolate chips, dried fruit, and that wonderful chewy oatmeal texture lingering on your tongue.

Last but not least — the scone.

Generously thick, with a beautifully soft, fluffy surface.

Pull it apart at that natural split, and the warm aroma of fresh wheat fills the air!

It melts in your mouth and pairs beautifully with coffee or tea.

The flavor is gentle and natural — kids will love it too!

One bonus: they offer in-store bread warming, so you can heat up your purchase right there and enjoy it fresh and toasty.
