Nishi Children’s Center in Koshi City (Suya) β Perfect Sandbox Debut Spot with a Ping Pong Table! Fun for Toddlers Through High Schoolers β«
2025.01.20

A Sarukuma writer visits and reports on “Nishi Children’s Center” located in Suya, Koshi City. We’ve gathered all the family-friendly tips, access information, and opening hours for you.
About Nishi Children’s Center
Hello there! It’s Kurubushi, your friendly writer from Sarukuma β彑
Today I’d like to introduce you to a fantastic spot located inside the Fureai-kan Health and Welfare Center in Suya, Koshi City:
“Nishi Children’s Center” (Nishi Jidoukan)
Let me tell you all about it!
The entrance to the Social Welfare Council building!
The decorations are always changed to match seasonal events and holidays βͺ

When you step inside, you’ll see Santa standing right next to the thermometer and hand sanitizer station!
Even though the topic doesn’t come up as much these days, infection prevention is still important here!
Walk straight ahead and you’ll find the reception desk at the end of the hallway.
Both Koshi City residents and visitors from outside the city are welcome,
but the registration forms are different, so be sure to check carefully β―

Fill out everyone’s name from top to bottom, including the parent’s name.
After signing in, the form is properly covered to protect your privacy β peace of mind guaranteed.
When the new fiscal year starts in April, you’ll need to re-register each time βͺ
There are several forms to complete, but the staff are wonderfully kind and will happily entertain your little ones while you fill them out β no need to rush βͺ
I’ve been coming here for several years, ever since my older child was about one year old. Even now that my older one has started preschool and I don’t visit as often, some of the staff still remember us from those early days. It really feels like a second home to meβ¦ (sniff)

Okay, enough reminiscing β turn right at the reception desk and you’ll find the entrance to the children’s center.
What Makes Nishi Children’s Center Special
When you hear “children’s center,” you probably picture an indoor space, right?
That’s the typical image, isn’t it?
Well, this place is different!
The moment you step through the children’s center entrance, you’re actually outside! (Yes, you read that right.)

My phrasing aside,
there’s an inner courtyard within the center where kids can fully enjoy outdoor play!

The play equipment is generously sized so kids can really get into it!
Adult supervision is required when children use the play equipment β
And there’s a sandbox too!!!!
Honestly, this is the perfect place for your child’s sandbox debut!
Because it’s an enclosed courtyard sandbox, the chances of finding any mysterious buried surprises are virtually zero.
For parents who want to let their kids play in a sandbox but feel a bit hesitant about hygiene, this place alone is worth the visit!

You can also borrow plenty of sandbox toys and other outdoor play equipment βͺ
It’s a good idea to bring a change of clothes since the kids will likely play their hearts out! (My own little one ended up needing a full outfit change once, ha!)
Alright, let’s head back inside.
Take off your shoes and place them in the shoe rack.
Once inside, you’ll find a space so spacious it can’t fit in a single photo!
The tatami area in the center is the baby corner!
The soft tatami flooring lets even pre-sitting babies play safely βͺ

The baby toy selection is impressive,
so you can let your little one try out all sorts of toys to discover what catches their interest!
And of course, snap a photo with a caption like “They were obsessed with this toy!” and send it off to the grandparents.
Next time you see them, you’ll probably be heading to a toy store together (wink wink).

My little BOSS was reliving his baby days,
completely absorbed in playing βͺ
Picture Book Corner
From beloved classics you never tire of to brand-new titles you’ve never seen before.
It’s lovely to take a break from active play and unwind with a good book.
For shy kids who feel hesitant to dive in and play with toys, browsing picture books with mom or dad is a great way to ease into the environment ~

Behind the baby corner, you’ll find the play kitchen / pretend play corner.
It’s stocked with mini kitchens, dishes, play food, and tons of other goodies.
There’s a huge variety of toys here, but BOSS was utterly fixated on shaking pepper into a teacup.
I guess you can’t become “BOSS Baby” with ordinary sensibilities.

And next, the large building blocks!
Available in different weights and shapes,
kids can use their whole bodies to stack and arrange them β great active play!

On the day we visited, there was even a ball pit!

Beyond the ball pit, on certain days they even set up a ping pong table!!!!!!
Places where you can use a ping pong table for free are pretty rare, right?
Kids in 4th grade and above can use it on their own,
so to anyone bored of their usual play options β let’s play ping pong!
The setup schedule is announced in the children’s center newsletter.
You can check the Koshi City website or the Koshi City Social Welfare Council website,
or β our top recommendation β register for the official LINE account of the Children’s Support Center to get the latest updates delivered to you.
Tucked in the back, you can spot the toy car corner where kids can race around βͺ
It’s wonderfully spacious~!

There are slides too~!
One for beginners and one for slightly more experienced kids.
BOSS recently mastered going down the slide,
so naturally he’s wearing the most triumphant face here.
“Wanna stop by my place?”
Everyone loves a tiny playhouse, don’t they?
There’s also a diaper-changing corner right inside the play area βͺ
This is honestly a lifesaver when you’ve got several kids in tow.
If the play area and the diaper-changing area are far apart, here’s how it goes:
Me: “Eek! They’ve pooped! I need to change them!”
Boss-girl (daughter): “NO! I want to keep playing!”
BOSS: “WAAAAH!!”
You know. It’s rough.
But here, you can change them with a smile on your face!
Oh, this!! I absolutely love this part!
You can really feel the warmth and care from the facility.
It’s like they’re saying, “It’s okay if they put it in their mouth, don’t worry, just have lots of fun!” (sob) (emotional rollercoaster)
And check this out! There’s an amazing toy lending library!
Board games, puzzles, Sylvanian Families, character toys β you name it.
So it’s not just for babies and toddlers β elementary school kids and older can absolutely have a blast here too βͺ
Here are the borrowing rules β―
Let’s all follow the rules and have fun together βͺ
Now let’s check out the restrooms.
You’ll find them just to the right after exiting the children’s center.
There’s a parent-child restroom so the whole family can go in together with peace of mind!
Although it’s not visible in the photo, there’s also a baby changing seat!
It’s spacious enough that you can probably even bring a stroller inside.
There are regular restrooms too!

These are barrier-free with wide passageways
and there’s a multi-purpose accessible restroom too.
The interior is similar to the parent-child restroom.

The standard restrooms are also equipped with baby keepers, so you can use them with peace of mind!
By the way,

there’s a vending machine quietly tucked away β
It’s positioned out of sight from the children’s center side,
and the selection is geared toward adults β meaning no “please please please” begging in front of the machine, lol.
That said, it does carry water and barley tea, so it’s a real lifesaver if you forgot your water bottle!
The fact that opening hours start at 8:30 AM is another big reason I recommend this place.
Kids wake up early after allβ¦
From 12:00 to 13:00, the facility closes for one hour for cleaning and disinfection.
Eating inside the facility is generally not allowed, so when the time comes, it’s a natural cue to head home β perfect for keeping lunch and nap times on schedule βͺ
Visitors include parents on parental leave and families with kids who haven’t started kindergarten yet β a wonderful mix of everyone.
If you live nearby and find yourself wondering, “Hmm, where should we go today? What should we do?” β definitely give this place a try βͺ
