📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
A Saru-Kuma writer visits “Tsubaki” in Kamiamakusa City and shares a firsthand report. We cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

Today we’re heading to
“Tsubaki,” a beloved seafood restaurant located in Naka, Oyano-machi, Kamiamakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

You’ll find Tsubaki right along Route 266, directly across from Hotel Hanatsubaki. Its convenient location makes it a regular stop for locals and travelers alike.

Step inside and you’re greeted by a live fish tank (ikesu) where today’s catch swims until the moment it hits your plate. With plenty of traditional tatami seating, it’s a wonderful spot for families with kids.

Recommended Menu

This time, instead of going for the classic kaisen-don (seafood rice bowl), we took the staff’s recommendation and ordered the show-stopping Bikkuri-don — a generous seafood tempura bowl!
The bowl is loaded with shrimp, squid, white-fleshed fish, sea urchin (uni), and crisp vegetables — all lightly battered and fried to golden perfection. The accompanying small dish, packed with fish roe in a beautifully balanced dashi broth, was an unexpected highlight.

Eating ultra-fresh seafood as tempura is a revelation — the natural sweetness of the fish really shines through. Since the restaurant sits right on the main road, it’s easy to spot. While you’re in the area, don’t miss Resola Terrace Amakusa nearby, a stylish complex perfect for a café break and famous for its delicious shio-pan (salt bread).
