About the Restaurant
Hello there!
This is Ayu-mama, a writer for “SaruKuma.”
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to Dondokoyu Restaurant, located in Shimono, Minamiaso Village, in the Aso District of Kumamoto.
Welcome to [Dondokoyu Restaurant]!
This restaurant is attached to the Dondokoyu hot spring facility, but you’re absolutely welcome to come just for the food too!
On the day we visited, the snow had piled up beautifully, giving the building a magical, almost Harry Potter-esque atmosphere!
(↑ Confession: I haven’t actually watched Harry Potter properly, so apologies if I’m way off!)
My son, who’s grown up in Kyushu’s warm climate and rarely sees this much snow, was absolutely thrilled!

We let him play in the snow for a bit before heading inside!
Now, back to the main attraction.
This restaurant prides itself on its premium meat dishes — you can enjoy juicy steaks and authentic Japanese yakiniku (grilled meat) here.

Here are the opening hours. Currently operating with adjusted hours.
The parking lot is absolutely huge — plenty of space for everyone!
There’s also a souvenir shop selling local meats,
fresh local vegetables,
and Japanese sweets — perfect for souvenirs!
First, you’ll purchase a meal ticket from the vending machine — a common system at casual Japanese restaurants.
The menu features lunch sets, plus
yakiniku set meals and steak combos.
A la carte meat options are also available.
Seating options include traditional zashiki (tatami-mat seating)
and regular table seats.
The interior is wonderfully spacious, so social distancing is no problem at all!
Children’s chairs are also provided, making it very family-friendly.
Recommended Menu
We came as a group of three adults and one child, so we ordered the
Yakiniku Assortment for 3 — ¥3,980, plus
the Children’s Yakiniku Set Meal — ¥980 for our son.
The Yakiniku Assortment for 3 comes complete with rice, soup, salad, Japanese pickles, and yogurt for dessert.
True to its reputation as a meat-focused restaurant, the beef is wonderfully tender — even children can enjoy it easily.
And the yogurt for dessert? Incredibly creamy and rich — absolutely delicious! (^^)
There are also combo deals that include admission to the Dondokoyu hot springs along with your meal.
Why not enjoy a relaxing onsen soak followed by a delicious meal? It’s the perfect Japanese travel experience!
