Introducing Midnight Coffee

Hello travelers! I’m Suno, a writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’m excited to introduce you to Midnight Coffee (Mayonaka no Coffee).A bright blue coffee truck with the mysterious name “Midnight Coffee” — it definitely catches the eye!

Wait… they’re open during the daytime too? Many locals and visitors have wondered the same thing.
Curious as I was, I had to ask about the story behind the name!

The origin of “Midnight Coffee” is a fun little tale…

That’s the magic of a coffee truck — friendly chats over a great cup of coffee.

The owner is wonderfully kind and always smiling, so be sure to ask him about the name yourself! On the day of my visit, the truck was parked at TSUTAYA Kotohira for a special “Kids’ Job Experience Day” event. My son got to step inside the truck and received hands-on barista training from the owner himself.

He was nervous the whole time, but absolutely fascinated by the barista experience. Watching him shyly but proudly do his “job” was such a heartwarming moment.“All done. Here you go!” — the very first cup of coffee my son ever brewed.

His dad was moved to tears receiving it…

Thank you for such a precious experience!

Family-friendly events like this are held regularly, so be sure to follow both TSUTAYA and Midnight Coffee on Instagram to catch the next one!
Beyond coffee, you can also order delicious treats like donuts and scones — highly recommended!

And the scones can be warmed up on request — such a nice touch.
The treats come beautifully wrapped — a lovely Japanese-style presentation!

It reminds me of Tanabata (Star Festival) decorations!
On some days, chairs are set out so you can sit back and enjoy your drink in comfort.
The glowing tip tray adds a touch of charm too!

Plus, they accept PayPay (Japan’s popular mobile payment) — super convenient for travelers!

Recommended Menu at Midnight Coffee

Café Menu

Hand-Drip Coffee (ICE ¥500 / HOT ¥450)

I ordered the “Fukuda Tomio Brazil” beans — beautifully sweet with a gentle acidity and rich, deep body. Truly exceptional flavor.

My husband, who tried it too, raved about how smooth and easy to drink it was!

Other options include café latte, plus specialty lattes like caramel, strawberry, and matcha (Japanese green tea) latte.

My personal recommendation? The Coffee & Donut set for ¥750 — the perfect combo!
They also feature seasonal limited-edition drinks!

Since my visit was just before Valentine’s Day, the special was the adorably named “Choco LOVE Café Mocha”.
And here’s the gorgeous raspberry pistachio donut!
The vibrant pink donut against the deep blue truck makes for a perfect Instagram shot!
The kids loved the chocolate scones too — “Crispy and delicious!” they cheered between bites.

At Midnight Coffee, beans are freshly ground and hand-dripped to order, one cup at a time — the true art of Japanese pour-over coffee. While you wait for your coffee, you can chat with the owner and soak in the friendly atmosphere. If you’re exploring Kumamoto, be sure to seek out the charming blue “Midnight Coffee” truck for an authentic local coffee experience!
