Today I’m taking you to a wonderful little spot in Hisaishi, Minamiaso Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture—
“Grands Mutter”.

I’d spotted their hot dog on Instagram and instantly knew—I had to go!

Parking is available right in front of the shop.

If the front lot is full, no worries—
there’s an additional parking area just across the street.

There are tables both inside and outside the shop, so you can enjoy your fresh-baked bread on the spot.
And good news for dog lovers—the outdoor tables are pet-friendly!

Grands Mutter takes pride in using locally sourced ingredients from area farms.
Their adorable grandmother mascot illustration gives the place such a warm, homey feel.

Beyond grab-and-go bread, they also offer the “Grands Mutter Bread Lunch”—
a perfect option if you’d like to sit back and enjoy a leisurely meal.

Inside, you’ll find shelves lined with fresh bread—though many varieties sell out quickly.
If you’ve got your eye on a hamburger sandwich or similar item, definitely come early!

Look out for unique varieties you won’t see everywhere, like the Sesame Bread (184 yen) and the eye-catching Charcoal Ball Bread (184 yen).
I have such a soft spot for these unusual breads…

The Big Bread (821 yen)
It’s a serious hunk of bread, but according to the owner,
this size is the sweet spot for the absolute best flavor.
Hearing that just makes you want to dig in.

You’ll also find sweet pastries, savory breads, sandwiches, and more.
Everything looks so good—prepare yourself for some serious decision-making!

Grands Mutter’s Must-Try Menu

This time I went straight for the Hot Dog (389 yen)—
the star that brought me here in the first place.

The eat-in area is stocked with a toaster, water, and small plates,
which makes sharing portions with little ones super convenient ♪

The moment it landed in front of me, my jaw dropped.
Talk about a serious volume!

As the owner put it:
“I always wanted to eat that big, glorious hot dog you see in foreign movies,
but I couldn’t find one anywhere—so I just made it myself!”
This is a dream-come-true hot dog, born from pure passion.

And honestly? It’s spectacular.
A perfectly crisp golden crust giving way to a soft, chewy mochi-like center.
The balance is sublime, and that toasty, fragrant aroma is absolutely irresistible.

In a single bite: crispy, chewy, fluffy.

Topped with a generous sausage, savory sauce, mayonnaise, and onions—
there’s simply no way this could be anything but delicious.
Despite its impressive size, I polished it off effortlessly.

Many customers also pick up bread here as a souvenir or thoughtful gift.
