Introducing Sushi Kawashima

Hello travelers! It’s Non, your SaruKuma writer, back again after a little while.

Today I’m taking you to
Funanoo-machi, Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture,
“Sushi Kawashima” (鮨 かわ島).

The exterior is incredibly stylish — a sleek and modern sushi restaurant that immediately catches your eye.
Parking is available right in front of the shop, plus a few more spaces just a couple of doors down (about 3 spots in total).

Inside, you’ll find a few counter seats and a selection of fully private rooms — perfect for an intimate meal.

The private rooms come in two styles: traditional Japanese tatami (zashiki) rooms and Western-style table rooms. Since I was visiting with my little one, we chose the tatami room, which was incredibly comfortable for families with small children.

Recommended Menu at Sushi Kawashima

Just thinking about the sushi I was about to enjoy made my mouth water!

For this visit, the adults treated themselves to the “Omakase Sushi” (chef’s choice course), while our 1-year-old enjoyed a “Natto Maki” (fermented soybean roll) and “Chawanmushi” (savory steamed egg custard).

Even the “tsukidashi” (amuse-bouche appetizer) was absolutely delicious!

The natto maki was bigger than expected — a generous portion!

Our 1-year-old absolutely loved it and devoured nearly the entire roll all by themselves.

And now, the moment I’d been waiting for — the “Omakase Sushi” course!

Plate 1: “Tuna (maguro), [name I missed], Shrimp (ebi), [name I missed]”

I was so excited that I completely missed catching the names of a couple of pieces. As a writer, that was a major slip-up — my apologies!

But oh, the flavor — truly, truly delicious.
The rice (shari) was lightly sweet and perfectly compact, with generously sized toppings — a wonderfully indulgent balance.

This time I made sure to take notes!

Purple uni — finally! This was the seasonal delicacy I’d been craving, and the very reason I came to Amakusa!

The flavor? Sweet, rich, and absolutely heavenly. ♡

By this point, the beer had kicked in and the uni had me distracted again — my apologies for missing details!

What I can tell you is that all three uni toppings were different varieties — an extraordinarily luxurious trio of plates.

The meal wrapped up with a comforting bowl of soup — the perfect way to take a relaxing breath after such an indulgent feast.

Our little one polished off the chawanmushi single-handedly too! (Quite the eater!)

Thanks to the private tatami room and kid-friendly menu options, we parents were able to relax without worrying about other diners and truly savor the sushi at our own pace.
