About Komeko no Oyatsu amam

Hello, and welcome back! It’s Binako, your SaruKuma writer, popping in once again.

Today we’re heading to Naganine-Higashi in Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City to visit
Komeko no Oyatsu amam — a charming little gluten-free sweets shop.

Komeko no Oyatsu amam mainly operates through pop-up events and markets, and they’ve even joined a SaruKuma marshé (market) event in the past.
Whenever they popped up at TSUTAYA, you could find me there, basket in hand, stocking up on treats.

So when I heard they had opened their very own brick-and-mortar shop in May 2023, I took it as a personal invitation and skipped right over to check it out.

There’s parking for about 5 cars right in front of the shop.
I arrived right at opening time, and the lot was already filling up fast!

The interior is bright, simple, and adorable, decorated mostly in white.
Customers stream in one after another, so if you have your heart set on a particular baked good, I highly recommend visiting in the morning.

Every treat at Komeko no Oyatsu amam is made with 100% rice flour and absolutely no wheat — perfect for gluten-free travelers!
They’re also serious about ingredients: no dairy, and they use olive oil instead of butter.
(Some items may contain dairy, so always check the labels.)

The story behind the shop is heartwarming — the owner’s husband has a wheat sensitivity, which inspired her to start baking with rice flour.
It’s a labor of love, and you can tell why the shop has so many devoted fans.

The counter is lined with a wide variety of muffins, and best of all, each one comes with a clear allergy label.
Knowing exactly what’s inside makes it so much easier to pick treats to share with friends — or to enjoy with peace of mind.

Right beside the muffins, you’ll find rows of chiffon cakes (220 yen).
They also take whole-cake reservations through Instagram now, so be sure to keep an eye on their account!

Across the way, you’ll spot the impossibly cute amam Cookies (100 yen) with their adorable little faces.
Are they Aa-chan and Mu-chan? (Probably not, but let’s go with it.)

These amam Cookies are egg- and dairy-free, making them safe for guests with allergies.
And at just 100 yen each? They’re a bargain — practically angels!
Cute, allergy-friendly, and affordable. You’ll be tempted to buy a whole armful.

You’ll also find Caffeine-Free Earl Grey Cookies (130 yen) and
Crunchy Cocoa Cookies (200 yen).
As someone who’s started watching my caffeine intake, I’m beyond grateful for these.
A tea-flavored cookie you can enjoy without worrying about caffeine? Pure happiness.

And the cocoa cookies — with that rich, slightly bitter twist that’s different from chocolate — are an absolute must.

Don’t forget the Chocolate Chip Cookies (200 yen)!
A universal favorite for both kids and adults.
You get three generously sized cookies in a pack — definitely a must-buy.

Recommended Treats at Komeko no Oyatsu amam

I couldn’t wait — I dove into the amam Cookies right there in the car.
The satisfying crunch and just-right sweetness completely won me over.
I couldn’t help but break into a huge smile.

Next up: the Caffeine-Free Earl Grey Cookies.
The moment they hit your tongue, it’s pure Earl Grey aroma!
The scent is so vibrant you’ll forget it’s even caffeine-free.
And that crisp, buttery texture? Absolute perfection.

I also tucked into the Crunchy Cocoa Cookies.
Crispy on the outside, melty in your mouth — such a fun texture.
The slightly bitter cocoa lingers beautifully on your palate.

Of course, I saved some treats to enjoy after getting home.
Lined up like this, the cuteness explodes — I couldn’t stop grinning.

For the chiffon cake, my tip is to tear it apart by hand.
And while you’re at it, hold it up to your ear.

Shuwa…

You’ll hear that delicate little sound — pure joy!
The melt-in-your-mouth texture is unreal.
What is this? I could eat it forever.

Rum Raisin & Cream Cheese Scone (200 yen)
The words “rum raisin” alone are enough to make me reach for my wallet.
The scone is wonderfully crumbly, with sweet raisins and the gentle aroma of rum.
The cream cheese rounds everything out beautifully.

The chocolate chip cookies have a soft, moist texture similar to a classic Country Ma’am-style cookie.
They’re loaded with chocolate chips, so every bite is bursting with chocolate goodness.

Koshi-Grown Roasted Sweet Potato Muffin (280 yen)
A “local-grown, local-eaten” muffin made with Beni Haruka sweet potatoes from Koshi City.
The chunks of sweet potato are wonderfully sweet and pair perfectly with the muffin.
This would be an ideal snack for kids, too.

Yame Matcha & Anko Muffin (300 yen)
Matcha and anko (sweet red bean paste) — an unbeatable Japanese pairing.
One bite and the matcha aroma fills your mouth and nose all at once.
My little matcha-loving Binako Jr. would absolutely lose her mind over this one.

And you can’t skip the Plain Muffin (180 yen).
For this size, 180 yen is a steal.
It’s gently sweet and easy to enjoy — a flavor that adults and kids alike will love.

And the best part of plain? You can spread jam on it or get creative however you like.

There are still so many muffins I haven’t tried yet — I’ll definitely be back soon.

Whether you have allergies or not, Komeko no Oyatsu amam is a place where everyone can enjoy delicious treats together.
The owner is just as warm and lovely as her sweets, and that’s why I can’t help but recommend this shop wholeheartedly.

The shop is open every Saturday plus select weekdays, so be sure to follow their Instagram for the latest schedule!
