📌 What you’ll learn in this article
A Sarukuma writer’s first-hand visit to “Karaage Kizo,” a beloved fried chicken takeout shop in Izumi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City. Prices start from 450 yen. We’ve covered family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

Karaage Kizo: Shop Introduction

Hello there!
This is Maru, your Sarukuma writer 🙂🙃

Today I’m introducing a fantastic karaage (Japanese fried chicken) spot located in Izumi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City,
“Karaage Kizo”.

You’ll find the shop on Izumi Fureai-dori Street,
diagonally across from the 7-Eleven Izumi store—an easy landmark for visitors.

When I arrived just past 1 PM, the bento boxes had already sold out! 🍱
Bento sales begin at 11:00 AM and typically sell out by just after noon.
My tip for tourists: arrive early, or call ahead to reserve your portion 😊

Here’s the legendary lunch box: the Karaage Bento for just 450 yen.

Kizo’s classic karaage menu 🎶

Each piece is fried fresh after you order—so it’s piping hot when you receive it. For larger group orders, advance reservations are recommended.
Though the shop officially closes at 19:30, last orders are usually taken around 19:00.

The kind owner happily shared all sorts of details about the menu 😊

And starting around 13:30, you can grab their afternoon special:

“Otsumami & Bokara”
Crispy fried chicken skin is a particularly unique find here in Japan! 😋

You can also wait inside on the seats provided. Signed celebrity boards line the wall—a clear sign of this shop’s local fame!

Karaage Kizo’s Recommended Menu

First up, I tried the Bokara (Small) for 380 yen

It comes on a skewer, making it super easy to eat on the go 😍

True to its name (“bo” means stick), the box is packed with stick-shaped fried chicken pieces!

And get this—they’re coated in panko breadcrumbs, fried katsu-style!

So delicious!

The chicken is so well-seasoned that you can enjoy it on its own without any sauce.
It’s also a perfect snack for kids 👦👧

Bokara comes with a complimentary dipping sauce!

Pictured here is the number-one customer favorite: Honey Mustard Sauce 🐝
★ Other options include Ethnic Chili Sauce, Sweet & Sour Sauce, and Tartar Sauce!

The sauce has a gentle honey sweetness that beautifully wraps around the whole-grain mustard.

A perfect balance of tang, sweetness, and a little spice 😍

Looks like a strange new fish, doesn’t it?

The sauce is generous, so I went all-in and dunked everything! 😄

Next, I tried the “Breast & Thigh Mix” Salt Karaage—2 to 3 pieces (about 100g) for 240 yen

This salt-seasoned karaage is right up my alley—seriously addictive! 😍

Juicy thigh meat with a crispy, well-seasoned coating that keeps you reaching for the next piece \(^o^)/

The shop uses a special chicken breed called “Mate Tea Chicken” (Mate-cha Dori), which gives the meat a distinctive umami and natural sweetness 🐔

You can also enjoy the leaner, healthier breast meat in the mix!

If you’re traveling through Kumamoto, definitely give Karaage Kizo’s Bokara and karaage a try—highly recommended! 😋✨
