Introducing cafe sucre
Hello, travelers!
This is Igaguri, your Sarukuma writer.
Today I’m taking you to Suzumugi in Ueki-machi, Kita-ku, Kumamoto City, to a charming little spot called “cafe sucre.”
Although the address says Ueki, it’s actually closer to Gyokuto Town, right near the popular restaurant “Yama Momiji”!

The road in the foreground heads toward Kumamoto City, and the road in the back leads to Tamana City.
Heads up if you’re driving from the Tamana direction: the sign sits along a curve and you’ll need to glance backward to spot it!
From there, you’ll wind your way up a slightly narrow slope, and…

You’ll arrive at a parking area that fits about 7 cars (just barely!).

Here’s the notice posted in front of the shop.
Lunchtime only, and only ONE item on the menu — talk about confidence!
And yet reservations are nearly impossible to land! Always fully booked!
(Even on weekdays, the earliest opening was a full month away…!)

The menu is also displayed outside for easy reference.

The entrance itself is adorable!

So cute!

Seriously cute!!

So cu… (okay, I’ll stop before this gets repetitive!)

The restroom even comes with a step stool and a baby changing table!
And there’s more…

They even provide plastic bags for used diapers!!
That earns some serious bonus points!!

Here’s a peek at the interior.
There are about 6 table seats, plus…

…sofa seating,

…and a terrace area stocked with toys and a baby chair (((o(*゚▽゚*)o)))
The Must-Try Menu at cafe sucre
The menu features just one option: the Sucre Box for ¥1,680 (tax included).

Wait…
What is this?

Appetizers were tucked inside!!!! ( ゚Д゚)

Chilled Royal with Ginger Jelly
(Reminiscent of chawanmushi — and the ginger jelly isn’t sharp at all, just delicious!)
New Onion Blanc-manger
Marinated Salmon with Sauce Anette

That new onion blanc-manger — you might even call it a mousse — was
incredible!!!

The house-made focaccia is also outstanding.
It looks like a French baguette, but the inside is wonderfully chewy.
The outside is crisp like a baguette — a focaccia like this is genuinely rare.

This focaccia is also available for takeout.
Baked fresh every morning, this generous size is just ¥400.
Sadly, by the time we asked, it had already sold out (all reserved in advance)…
If only I’d known sooner — what a missed opportunity!

The meat main course was the Grilled Chicken Thigh with Japanese-Style Beurre Noisette
(Tender teriyaki-style chicken paired with a brown butter sauce.)

Honestly, just absolutely delicious.

The fish main course was Mackerel Wrapped in Kadaif with Saikyo Miso Herb Vinaigrette
(Mackerel wrapped in ultra-thin noodle-like pastry, finished with a tangy French-style salad dressing.)

The mashed potato underneath, plus the purple cabbage rapée?
Many diners might actually prefer those (^^♪

Dessert was Golden Brûlée and a Rich Chocolate Terrine.
For drinks, we went with apple juice and coffee.

Incredible (it’s the only word I can come up with! (^^;)

The pairing of berry ice cream with rich chocolate was also incredible.
Although they only operate at lunchtime, the restaurant turns over 2–3 seatings, so we enjoyed a leisurely 2-hour meal.
Even though the chef personally delivers each freshly prepared dish, the timing is impeccable — in fact, our conversation was so lively that the next course often arrived before we noticed.
With no dinner or alcohol service, you almost wonder how this place makes a profit.
By focusing on a single menu, the chef likely keeps overhead low through bulk sourcing, but honestly, the quality here is so high you’d happily pay Â¥3,000.
The portions are also substantial, so even a hungry guest will leave fully satisfied.
A French restaurant worth waiting 1–2 months for — wouldn’t you love to give it a try? ( ̄ー ̄)ニヤリ
