Today I’m taking you to Ninomaru, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, to visit
“Aso-tei Yamami Chaya” — one of the most beloved local eateries in the area!

It’s located right inside Josaien, the popular cultural and dining village at the foot of Kumamoto Castle.

When relatives came to visit from out of town, we did the classic Kumamoto sightseeing combo — Kumamoto Castle and Josaien! 😄

By the way, the iconic Kumamoto Castle keep is set to reopen to the public from April 26th — definitely worth checking out! 🏯

Here’s a peek inside the restaurant. The table seating feels nice and roomy — never cramped.

There aren’t dedicated kids’ chairs, but they do offer a Bumbo seat for little ones — super handy for traveling families!

They also have a private tatami room — perfect for families with kids who want a relaxed, traditional Japanese dining experience! 👦👧

Now, let’s check out the menu! ♪

Their star dish: the Lava Stone Grill Set (Yogan-yaki Zen) (´∀｀)

You can choose from Kumamoto’s famous Akaushi (red beef) or basashi (horse meat) — both grilled tableside on volcanic lava plates!

The menu is packed with Kumamoto local specialties — including takanameshi (mustard greens rice) sets!

Don’t miss the Basashi Set (horse sashimi) and Dago-jiru Set (regional dumpling soup)!

You can also order the lava grill items à la carte…

And more single-serving options. They even have onigiri (rice balls) — perfect for kids! 👦👧

Takeaway onigiri are also available — great for picnicking on Ninomaru Plaza!

First up — getting ready for the Kumamoto Akaushi Lava Grill experience.

The little solid fuel burner gives me serious school-trip nostalgia vibes — anyone else? So exciting! (^O^)

The lava plate is made from genuine basalt sourced from the foothills of Mount Aso. Cook each piece slowly to perfection ♪ Pure bliss 😍

Dip it in their signature clear house-made sauce — it’s something special!

Lava-grilled meat comes out incredibly juicy and tender, with the umami beautifully concentrated. The sauce is light yet keeps you coming back for more 😋

The set also comes with this beautifully handcrafted namaage (lightly fried tofu) — wonderfully homemade and delicious.

The included dago-jiru (Kumamoto-style dumpling soup) is comforting and soul-warming \(^o^)/

Next, the Akaushi Beef Bowl (Akaushi-don) — 1,600 yen

Or go big with the Akaushi-don BIG — 1,980 yen!

Compared to the regular bowl, the amount of beef is seriously next level 💕︎

Look at that — generous sauce, a cascading soft egg yolk!!!

Just look at that gorgeous color and shine 😍 The sauce isn’t overly sweet, so the natural flavor of the beef truly shines!

And finally, the Basashi Set (Horse Sashimi) — 2,680 yen.
