Introducing Mottidalinda — An Ohagi Specialty Shop in Kumamoto

Hello, traveler!
This is Binako, a writer for Sarukuma, bringing you another delicious discovery from Kumamoto.

Today’s spotlight is on a charming new shop located in Suya, Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Mottidalinda” — an ohagi specialty shop that’s been turning heads since opening day.

If you’ve never tried ohagi before, you’re in for a treat. Ohagi is a traditional Japanese sweet made of soft sticky rice wrapped in or coated with sweet bean paste — a beloved confection enjoyed for centuries.

This shop, which opened on June 13, was founded by a Japanese cuisine chef with a passion for showcasing the full creative potential of wagashi (Japanese sweets). The result is a stunning lineup that ranges from classic ohagi to truly innovative creations you’ll want to photograph before tasting.

Parking is available for two cars right in front of the shop.

Step inside and you’ll find a sleek, modern interior accented with warm wooden tones — a stylish space that already had local fans lining up before opening day.

【Linda 9+1 Set (1,850 yen)】
If you’re like me and want to try a little of everything, this generous set is the perfect way to sample the shop’s signature flavors.

Single ohagi are also available, so you can buy just one or two for a light treat on the go.

【Burnt Caramel Cream Shake (490 yen)】
This is the “shake you eat” — thick, beautifully presented, and loved by both kids and adults.

Must-Try Menu Items at Mottidalinda

【Chunky Red Bean / Smooth Red Bean / Hana White Bean (149 yen each)】

The classic — Chunky Red Bean (Tsubuan).
Elegantly sweet with the satisfying texture of whole red beans coming through in every bite.

Smooth Red Bean (Koshian)
Silky and melt-in-your-mouth — a kid-friendly favorite with a wonderfully soft texture.

Hana White Bean (Hana Shiroan)
This one is almost too pretty to eat — and it’s only 149 yen.
The white bean paste delivers a clean, refined sweetness with a subtle richness.

【Green Tea / Kinako (Roasted Soybean Powder) / Ancient Rice (179 yen each)】
These creative ohagi are crafted with carefully selected rice and premium ingredients.

Green Tea
A luxurious balance of subtle bitterness from the matcha and gentle sweetness from the bean paste. Perfect for those who prefer their sweets less sugary, including older guests.

Kinako (Roasted Soybean Powder)
The nutty aroma of roasted soybean fills your senses with every bite. A flavor kids absolutely love.

Ancient Rice (Kodaimai)
The unique, grainy texture of ancient rice gives this ohagi serious character.
A chewy, satisfying bite that food adventurers will love.

【Sesame Paste & Burnt Soy Sauce (249 yen)】
A creative ohagi that pairs two iconic Japanese flavors.

Rich, fragrant sesame meets the crisp saltiness of soy sauce — a combination that simply cannot miss. This was my personal favorite of the bunch.

【Banana Cream & Coconut (249 yen)】
Banana and coconut on an ohagi? It’s an exciting, totally unexpected combination.

The moment it hits your tongue, sweet coconut aromas blend with fruity banana notes for a flavor experience that exceeds every expectation.

【Colombian Cappuccino (249 yen)】
A must-try for coffee lovers visiting Kumamoto.

Bold coffee flavor blooms across your palate from the very first bite.
Even those who normally don’t drink coffee may find themselves converted by this irresistible creation.

【Burnt Cream Cheese (279 yen)】
Yes, you read that right — torched ohagi! It’s an inventive twist you won’t find anywhere else.

Sweet bean paste meets meltingly smooth cream cheese.
The salty edge of the cheese amplifies the sweetness beautifully — it’s pure magic in every bite!

With so many varieties to explore, my entire perception of ohagi was completely transformed.
I never imagined ohagi could be this fun and adventurous!
Every bite brings a new discovery and a smile.
